From the Hart: Tuesday afternoon practice observations
Written by Andy Hart on August 11, 2009 – 6:41 pm

New England just concluded the 22nd workout of training camp 2009 under hot, sunny conditions on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium. The action took place in helmets, shells, jerseys and shorts/sweats. It was the seventh workout of camp to take place in anything other than full pads, the second straight after the morning’s walk-through. It was the third training camp practice in shells.

–Music legend and longtime Bill Belichick friend Jon Bon Jovi was on the practice field for the afternoon work. He chatted with Patriots owner Robert Kraft for quite a while during the session. Bon Jovi’s music was played over the loud speakers during pre-practice stretching.
–Those not on the field for the afternoon included Shawn Springs, Paris Lenon, Nathan Hodel, Tedy Bruschi, George “Bus” Bussey, Wes Welker, Benjamin Watson and Mike Wright. Brandon Tate remains on NFI, Mark LeVoir on PUP and Tyrone McKenzie injured/unsigned.
Welker has now missed the last two practices as he was not on the field Monday night. Hodel is also an interesting absence as it’s not too often that a long snapper would be given a day off.
–The practice focused on a lot of passing work on both offense and defense. Mixed into the passing game action was plenty of situational work prepping for game action Thursday night in Philly.

Day 13, second Patriots practice

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots wrapped up their afternoon practice (3:45-5:30) and it was a shorts-and-shells (light shoulder pads) session that was held at half to three-quarters speed. This looked like a clean-up practice as the team nears the end of preparations for Thursday’s preseason opener.

In 22 training camp practices, the Patriots have been full pads 15 times, with four walkthroughs and three shorts-and-shells sessions.

Jon Bon Jovi was present for the practice, and the team warmed up to his music.

1) Ingram the lone long snapper. If practice reps are any indication, Thursday’s preseason opener will be an important long-snapping audition for sixth-round draft choice Jake Ingram. Veteran Nathan Hodel wasn’t on the field for this session and Ingram has been receiving more work in recent days. The Patriots seldom had worries in this area with Lonie Paxton over the last nine years, and the coaching staff figures to give Ingram game reps to see how he responds under the bright lights. Linebacker Rob Ninkovich took some snaps with the scout team.

2) Brady, Moss … & Edelman. After the Patriots worked on a few plays inside the 10, quarterback Tom Brady wanted to go over some of the finer points of route combinations with two of his receivers – Randy Moss and Julian Edelman. It looked like Brady was tutoring Edelman on how he wanted a specific route run. That Edelman is on the receiving end of such instruction – and running combination routes with Moss – is an indication of his progress.

Training camp: Offense gets a night off from meetings
5:38 PM Tue, Aug 11, 2009
By Shalise Manza Young

Rookie offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer earned his teammates the night off from meetings, catching a punt from Chris Hanson at the close of this evening's session.
Hanson did Vollmer no favors with the punt, as it drifted a bit to Vollmer's left and was wobbly. Vollmer juggled the ball for a split-second, but was able to hang on and was mobbed by his teammates; Bill Belichick also shook his hand in congratulations.

In recent years, Vince Wilfork (who last year made the catch with one ball already tucked in his arm) and Matt Light have been the players tabbed to catch the punt. It has become a fun camp tradition.

Punt catch by Sebastian Vollmer leads to pandemonium at Patriots practice…
Posted by Ian Rapoport at 6:25 pm

You know it’s getting late in camp when Patriots coach Bill Belichick breaks out his annual Random Big Guy Catching a Punt For A Reward kinda thing. And today was the day.

Belichick called up the players for a post-practice huddle, and a cheer emerged. Then, as excitement built, rookie offensive lineman Sebastian VollmerAKA Sea Bass — trotted down 40 yards to prepare to catch a punt from Chris Hanson.

Sometimes, it’s Vince Wilfork. Other times Matt Light. This time, it was Vollmer.

While the team waited anxiously, Vollmer reeled in the wobbly kick, bouncing it off his chest and finally corralling it. Cue pandemonium and celebration (right).

Benjamin Button Brady; Tuesday notes

Benjamin Button Brady; Tuesday notes
By Paul Perillo, Patriots Football Weekly

Tom Brady spoke to the media for the second time during training camp on Tuesday and maintained his position regarding his potential play in the preseason -- he's all for it.

...

Who’s hot: Randy Moss – I’m falling into the typical training camp trap of selecting Moss, fully aware that I could substantiate doing so every do he’s in uniform. The wideout was galloping all over the field during some situational work, catching several passes including back-to-back touchdowns as the clock was winding down.

Who’s not: Jamar Love – This one really isn’t fair considering the experience levels of the players involved, but Love had the misfortune of covering Moss throughout the afternoon as part of the scout defense. Moss likely lost count of his catches at one point because Love was powerless to stop the onslaught.

Play of the day: Brady looked deep for Greg Lewis during a team period late in practice and was rewarded when one of his new targets made a terrific play. Lewis was well covered by Mike Richardson on the play but the wideout jumped at the perfect time and outwrestled the corner for a big gain.

Color me impressed by Wilfie. At sessions I attended, Faulk and Welker field their punts with a 2nd ball in their right hands. Edelman tried it, muffed the punts and then used both hands. Saw him drop one two handed. Not that I can field punts well.
