schefter just reported this on the NFL Total Access show....

that sounds like a pretty serious contract (similar to what we offered branch?)

Are you sure he wasn't saying what Thomas got but said Welker by mistake?

It's likely that the contract is severely backloaded and there is a poison pill provision in the offer. There could be 18-20 million in the last two years of the contract, which Welker will likely never see (he'll be extended or released before that) but which would become guaranteed if Miami was to match the offer. The contract is probably around 5 years, 18 million or so, which is a good price for a guy like Welker.

no, he was totally talking about welker....he was also saying things like "if only had miami tendered him at the 1.8 mil level, then they could have at least gotten a first rounder"

this is all insanely exciting to be such major players in free agency. getting thomas alone would have made it the best offseason ever.

Dan - some here are trying to pull your leg but in case you don't catch on real quick we've known about this for some time now. Shefter was reporting this on the web NFL site a while ago.

This just made me burst out laughing.

It's like the moon turned to blue cheese or something. I keep checking overhead for signing of pigs flying, but nothing yet.

That's just crazy. How much did we offer to Deion Branch last year?

38 million sounds a number to #1 receiver. Not a ST player.

I think you are probably right on. I would say Wes, who puts up about 50 yds/g (not one 100 yd game last year, I think game high was about 77 or so and actually did 1 for -1 against the Pats FYI) probably is not going to see more than 3.5 per year. I like this guy for that number.

and I wonder if maybe they see him as being a replacement for troy brown. not the troy brown of now so much as the 2001 troy brown. small, fast, good hands, versatile, tough and will catch over the middle.

still 7 years is absurd it has to be a poison pill

As others mentioned, I'm sure the contract is worded to where we can void several years but Miami would have to guarantee the money. Welker would never see $38 million.

It's just like last year when the Seahawks signed Nate Burleson from Minnesota. They worded the contract to say that if Burleson played in a dome for more than six games in a season, the entire $49 million contract would be guranteed. So obviously Minny didn't match.

I don't get it with the Welker deal. We've got plenty of #3 receivers; we need a #1. Not a #3 getting paid #1 money.

Any Jests RFAs out there? I love making these AFC EAST teams give up players over stupidity of not tendering them correctly.

I don't know what got into them, but the Pats are taking no prisoners so far in FA.

The Pats already Franchised Samuel. About 2 weeks ago.

That's because you aren't looking at everything.

    1) Welker is a #3 getting #2 money.
    2) The deal, though it is "7 years/38.5 million," most assuredly has 1-2 bogus years at the end that are worth about $20 million. That changes it to a 5-6 year deal worth 18.5 million. Much more palatable.

Was last year as good as it gets with Welker? I hope not if the Pats are giving up this much for the guy. I think he can have an impact in every game and cause mismatches every where he lines up. I would go as far as to say that his a poor man's Steve Smith. We'll see.

7th year is worth 20 million if he plays fro miami in 5 games... as he plays fro the pats and already got 3 million signing bonuse. His numbers should be less than 2million when you consider guaranteed money .

    #75 Jersey

Welker must be as shocked as I am about this. As Captain Hanks said in Private Ryan,"Earn it Wes, earn it."
