The dynasty was conceived.

It's easy for me to remember the day because I was stuck in the hospital while my second, and last, son was born.

I dropped off my other son at daycare. While driving to the hospital I heard on the radio (I live in CA so this was 10am or so EST) that Pete Carrol had been fired. No surprise. I heard that the Patriots had asked for permission to talk to Belichick. Which got me excited because I was a "BelichickFan" from his days in Cleveland (and had to swallow hard when he was with the Jets as I was a Patriots fan).

Then I get to the hospital and am watching ESPN with the Bottom Line scrolling and I see "Bill Parcells resigns, Belichick named New York Jets Head Coach". I want to cry. Then, later, I see "Bill Belichick resigns as New York Jets Head Coach" and I say "WHAT THE F*CK IS GOING ON". Meanwhile I'm stuck in a hospital room, occasionally making an excuse to leave so I can get out to the car to listen to 5 minutes of the radio.

It was an amazing day, 6 years ago today. And none of us, even ardent "BelichickFan"s could possibly have envisioned 3 Super Bowl wins 6 years later.

Great, now I've got the image of a dynasty "conception" in my head... which comes about only when an owner and a GM/HC love each other VERY much and decide to consumate their love with a long-term contract....

...the next morning the HC/GM goes "shopping" to make a wonderful breakfast to share with the owner

LMAO - well you know that Kraft and Belichick were eyeing each other for the 4 years of Pete Carrol knowing that they both wanted each other.

Great remembrance of a big day. From the sounds of your story that whole "hospital/2nd child" thing must've been a huge annoyance while trying to focus in on the real news!

Just remember to wish your kid a Happy Birthday today. Too bad that selfish wife of yours kept you stuck in the hospital that day!

a baby whose birth coincides with such an auspicious day should have a good name. so out with it!
i wish you coulda seen tthe press conference where BB resigned as coach of da jets. have never seen a coach do that before, and never will after. BB just had no words, looked scared, like he expected to be served with 100 summonses any minute.

Ahhh, the legendary press conference. I have heard and read so much about that performance. It kills me not to have ever seen a video of it.

If ANYONE has a LINK to that video, PLEASE, PLEASE let the rest of us hungry wretches glimpse that moment.

I don't know if I'd use the word stuck around your son while he's growing up though :D

not your wife, either

Yeah, I've looked around on occasion for a video of that but never seen it. I would LOVE to see it.

It was. I was able to sneak out to listen to Peter King's update. And I couldn't wait to run home to check out the message boards (Mouth Off and whatever patsfans.com was back then) to try to find out what was really going on.

Nothing that matters - Alexander. I have told my wife, though, had I had it to do over again I may have insisted on Rodney. I really, really miss #37 not being out there :(

I don't know if he was or not but it was an annoyance. The baby had been born with a scheduled C-Section, it was just a bunch of sitting around while nurses did whatever tests they had to do.

Me???? Sarcastic???????

That Belichick press conference with the Jets was priceless. And then Gutman takes the podium and fumbles for words in a state of shock and calls BB "disturbed," etc. I wish I had that on video.

I was styill living in NYC at that time, and it was hilarious! I can still remember Mike Francesa (huge Parcells butt-buddy) saying that he knew that Bob Kraft was behind the BB resigning fiasco and that BB would end up in New England and that would be a horrible move for Belichick and that no one would ever be able to win up there. I'm sure that WFAN has some sort of archives from back then, maybe WEEI can get it and play it.

Also Woody Johnson: could I have the "I resign as the HC of the NYJ" napkin, I think it belongs in the HOF with BB!!!!!!!!!

One has to wonder what led up to the napkin being written

My theory is that Woody Johnson (how is he NOT a spokesman for Viagra?) was informed of BB's decision and then he or some lawyer stated it was invalid until submitted in writing, thinking they could buy some time while BB's lawyers haggled over wording.

BB, putting the icing on his FU cake, quickly scribbled his resignation as "HC of the NYJ" on the nearest paper like substance and had one of WJ's lackey's hand deliver it.
