Jeremy Cain?

(Oh, that would be Tully.)

And Bruschi can't start on the PUP. He's already practiced. Same with Koppen.

Don Davis is missing. And the two Scotts.

Cobbs could replace Evans, and maybe 1 different guy on DL, LB and DB. but a good list a lot of NFL players in the last cut.

Actually the only 2 who can be on PUP are Kaczur and Pass...and my guess is BOTH will start there.. There are 3 others, but they fall into an the NFLE Bermuda Triangle..

Seems like we're short 2-3 OL for starters.

How Many do you think we need?

Eight certianly could be enough. But to be fair, if we only keep 8, I would be worried about only having Hocstien as the backup for center and both guard positions.

I would prefer cutting kleko and going with 6 D lineman and adding another back-up guard.

Any roster with Klecko and Warfield fails the laugh test.

I would add Guss Scott and Don Davis. These two are greatly needed on the special teams.

I agree with rook that Chad Scott is the next player, but I do not disagree with choosing Gay over him.

Britt over Gorin is not happening, unless Gorin is traded and Kaycur is playing.

Am I the only one that still thinks that Smith will end up on the Practice Squad?

Alexander and Woods will likely be replaced by veterans, with Beisel and Chad Brown, or others yet to be picked up.

Alexander is making too many plays on ST currently to go anywhere.

I forgot about Chad Scott. Don't think Guss Scott makes it. Too small/injury prone.

Probably put Chad Brown ahead of Woods too.

Gorin s/b gone, he has proven to be average at best. Britt has upside.

Don Davis plays special teams only, so I figure they'll keep Izzo or Davis but not both.

What, no Beisel ?!!!

Starting to feel a little better about the roster.

Overall Summary
  • Offense - Young strong offense, WR is weak unless Branch signs or something else shakes out.
  • Defense - Not as old as you think. Some young players will be added added to LB core.
UPPER CASE indicates player is over 30 at start of season.

*See disclaimer for additional nonsense,

QB (2) Brady, Cassel
Comments - Don't even think it… Bracelet to practice squad (PS)

W.R. (5) Porter, Caldwell, Jackson, BROWN, Childress
Comments - Why not start with a bang, I hope Branch comes back but why not think out of the box.... Branch traded straight up for Porter, gives us a bigger receiver with 2 manageable years of salary. Also strong possibility that another vet (Patten, Rodgers, Williams replaces Childress). In that case Bam goes to practice squad (if eligible I don't know the rules, see disclaimer below)

O Line (9) Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, O'Callahan, Hochstein, Kaczur, Gorin, Mruczkowski
Comments - Potential strength of team, only real competition is RT. Stevenson to practice squad, and Britt if he is eligible (again I don't know the PS rules)

RB (4) DILLION, Maroney, FAULK, Evans
Comments - Nice mix, another strength. Pass to PUP. Cobbs to PS.

TE (4) Watson, Graham, Thomas, Mills
Comments - Great to see Graham back, on the TD run from Dillion he was a monster.

DL (6) Seymour, Warren, Wilfork, Green, Wright, Smith
Comments - Fight is on for back-up NT. Wilfork and Warren looked great versus Arizona. If Smith outplays Sulllivan and gets roster spot BB sends a clear message "I don't care where you were drafted or if you were the best player in your Junior High, jobs are decided by on the field performance."

LB (10) Colvin, VRABEL, BRUSCHI, SEAU, Banta-Cain, Gardner, Alexander, Woods, Mincey, IZZO
Comments - Possibility of Beisel making last spot and either Mincey or Woods going to PS.

Safety (5) HARRISON, Wilson, Hawkins, Sanders, JONES
Comments - Hopefully 37 is all the way back. Ventrone to PS.

CB (5) Samuels, Hobbs, SCOTT (Chad), Gay, Andrews
Comments - If a "quality" player becomes available I could see SCOTT being shoved aside. Wilson, Hawkins add more depth in an emergency. Scott & Andrews can backup at safety. Vernell Brown to PS

Specialists (3) MILLER, Gostkowski, Paxton
Comments - Not really any surprises

PUP Pass and maybe Kaczur
Comments - Pass starts on PUP, if Kaczur is on list then Stevenson or Britt takes his spot.

Practice Squad Roach (LB), Stevenson (OG \ C), Cobbs (RB), Vernell Brown (CB), Vetrone (CB), Britt (OT)
Comments - If Sullivan beats Smith, Smith to PS. If Beisel beats Woods or Mincey, one of the them goes to PS.

Disclaimer
I) Pricing and participation may vary.
ii) I don't know what I am talking about and this list subject to change without warning. An update will be posted after each pre-season game.
iii) I really don't know the PS rules.

I think, based on BB observation pre-Arizona that about 40 guys have carved out a role for themselves, we can do a best guess in many of the areas. Another board (which should probably be merged in Ian) has a helpful breakdown of how many players have been retained each year of the BB tenure. Let's do what we know:

QB. We know BB has always carried at least 3; once he did 4. It seems counterintuitive to assert that this year will have 2, but that's every appearance.

Brady
Cassell.

RB. The most RB BB ever had was 5. He sometimes did 4. This seems like a depth call. The pool is deep this year, so you can assume 5.

Dillon
LoMo
Faulk
Mills
Pass/Cobbs/Evans

WR. This was never fewer than 5, even in years as lean or leaner than this one. It has been 6, but only in deep years. We can assume 5:

Branch
Jackson
Brown
Caldwell
Childress/Kight

TE. This is simple. There have always been 3, and there are 3 good TEs in camp.

Watson
Graham
Thomas

OL. There have usually been 9, enough for 5 starters and 2 backups each for guard/center and tackle.

Light
Mankins
Koppen
Hochstein
Neal
O'Callahan
Kazcur
Gorin
Brit

ST. There has always been 3: K, LS, P

K: Gostkowski (the worm has turned)
P: Walter
LS: Paxton

D-line. In the early days, this was 8 (because of the personnel need for a 3-4). Since then, it has drifted down to 6 or 7. Because of LB depth issues, 7 may be how they go this year.

Seymour
Wilfork
Warren
Green
Wright
Smith
Sullivan/Klecko

LBs. This has been 9 or 10 pretty consistently. Believe it or not, you can get to 9 pretty plausibly

Bruschi
Beisel
Seau
Izzo
Davis
Colvin
Vrabel
TBC
Mincey/Alexander/Roach/

DB. This has always been about 10. Same this year:

Samuel
Gay
Hobbs
Wilson
Harrison
Warfield
Jones
Hawkins
Sanders
G. Scott

There's your 53 if you are focused on history.

Based on the two preseason games, I 'm thinking Sullivan would stick over Smith. Smith to the PS. Although Cleveland and the Jets need a backup NT.

Doesn't Clevland already have Ethan Kelly and Babatunde Oshinowo.

Taxplaya, if Walter is the punter, I want my birthday back.

No Willie Andrews?!?

And for your OL, you have 3 tackle backups, but only 1 G/C backup.

No Chad Brown?

Chad Scott makes it before Warfield or Guss.

There's your 53 if you are focused on history.

I start with a couple of assumed facts and some more information.

1) Branch if he doesn't show up is on the "Failed to Report List", making the team a 53 + 1 FTRL.
2) Two guys are eligible for PUP; Kaczur and Pass will both be pupped. Making the Team 53 + 1 FTRL + 2 PUP or 55 total.

Players making the 53 will automatically be eligible for their full 2006 salary.
So I assume someone old with little prospect of pickup can be cut and brought back; guys like Chad Brown or Don Davis or Larry Izzo or Jr Seau or maybe Monty Besiel.
3) I predict Chad Brown and maybe Don Davis will be cut and brought back almost immediately. Making the team still 55 but with two almost "shadow roster" guys soon coming back. The roster is really 53 plus 1 FTRL + 2 PUP plus 2 oldtimers or + 2 safe cuts.

Observations and thinking:

Off the AZ game Sully has shown enought to be the backup NT. The Pats keep seven DLs as is their usual situation. Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, and then Green, Wright, Sully, and ... Smith. Hill to IR.

I will guess that BB keeps two kickers until he can get pry a draft pick from a kicker-needing club. Anywhere from a day or two, to a week or two, however long it takes for the trade and Chad Brown to get healthy enough to play and backup the OLBs.

LBs will be 10 as usual; they are Bruschi, Vrabel, Colvin, TBC and then Gardner, Beisel, Woods, Mincey, Seau, and ... Alexander. Izzo and Davis and Brown get cut. Brown and Davis to return almost immediately. Izzo is gone.
Seven under thirty, three over thirty, but with returnees, soon to be more.

ST LBs are Gardener, Alexander, Woods, Mincey and eventually Davis.

The DBs are as you picked them 10, but I think they keep Chad Scott and let Eric Warfield go. But you could be right.

The Pats keep 9 OL as is their usual situation plus Kaczur on PUP for nine but counting as 8 + 1PUP. They are Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Gorin and then Hochstein, O'C & Britt.
Yates & Stevenson to PS. Mrucz cut wo PS eligibility. Back to "shadow roster". This assumes of course no Dallas trade for Gorin.

QBs are two Brady and Cassel. Maybe Bramett or Mortenson to the PS. Mostly to run the scout QB, weekly.

The RBs are five as you picked it but Pass can be PUPped. so its 5 plus 1PUP counting as five. Cobbs or Evans? Cobbs has PS eligibilty, Evans doesn't, so its Evans (plus I think he is a little better). Might lose Cobbs. if the surmise is that they keep 2 kickers looking for a draft pick than Evans could get cut too; he has cleared waivers before and could again but could be back soon.

TE are the three you picked and Mills is counted as a RB.

Easy wasn't it?
