4/5 of those players were off the board when the Pats had their second pick

Pats were fine tuning their DB specs then......midget, quick twitch, dime backs that tackle when the ball was in the air. A couple more years and I think we will see some fruit

Our 2007 draft was so, so.. unless you include Moss and Welker..

But subsequent drafts have been getting better, culminating with "kick azz" the past few years...

That area really is a hole on this current team. Those guys should be in their prime right now and if we hit on just a few of them we might have something to show for it.

The 2010 - 2012 drafts have been as good as any in the NFL so far imo.

You gotta credit Nick Caserio. He really seems to have emerged as a very good college evaluator. His free agency moves have been up and down (he hit gold with Nickovich, Waters, Connolly, and a few others while striking out on Ellis, Ocho, and Haynesworth). Since he really got his college scouting system in place (which usually takes a year or two for most personnel guys), his drafts have been spectacular.

Some people are saying bring back Pioli, but Caserio's recent drafts are as good as any of Pioli's best drafts with the Pats.

Remember, though, how stacked that team was before the draft.

That is a very strong draft. Having two first round picks helped a lot. Also, having the 11th pick helped, but in hindsight it is amazing that Willis fell so far especially with a head scratcher like Ted Ginn taken before him. Granted the top of the 2007 draft had some great players (Megatron, LaRon Landry, Joe Thomas, Adrian Peterson).

That's the one thing people fail to acknowledge about the Pats' 2007 draft when they trash it. Yes, they had 9 picks, but only in the first three rounds and six picks in the sixth or seventh. And their fourth round pick was almost a fifth rounder since it was the 28th pick in the 4th round. So they had one pick in the first 170 picks of the 2007 draft.

It wasn't a good draft by any stretch of the imagination. But considering they only had one pick in the first three rounds, the ceiling of what that draft could have been was fairly low to begin with.

It was a top-heavy draft class. Given the lack of depth and our lack of high picks it was a real feat to come out of that draft with two Hall of Famers on the team (Moss and Welker) and a Pro Bowler with one of the picks they received for the next draft (Mayo).

Would AP have been nice? Sure, if it were possible.

San Francisco, just like any NFL team - even the ones that have been among the best at drafting - has had their fair share of misses as well.

    San Francisco 49ers All-Time Draft History - Pro-Football-Reference.com

2012: Four draftees have yet to play an NFL game

2011: Four draftees no longer with the team

2010: 2nd round pick S Taylor Mays lasted one year in SF

2009: One starter and one backup are all that remains on the team

2008: 1st round pick DE Kentwan Balmer lasted two seasons; 3rd round pick S Reggie Smith is out of the NFL

2007: Two 4th round picks that had virtually no NFL career

2006: 3rd round pick WR Brandon Williams had zero receptions in the NFL

Per the standards of this forum, if the Pats had made those same picks then we would constantly have threads started, complaining about how awful the team is at drafting

So is this a slam on the drafting ability of the 49ers? Absolutely not; you look at the last several years and I would say that they have done extremely well in that regard. It's just something to consider next time somebody wants to complain about the draft history of the Pats.

People want Pioli back? I haven't seen that, but if so, then that's crazy. Pats have done better without him than they did the last few years with him.

Mayo was drafted the following year - Meriweather was the first round pick in 2007.

    No Jersey Selected

I remember I was on a road trip that year and was listening to the draft on the radio. I kept saying "wow, good pick" whenever the Niners came up. Willis was my binky that year and I was pretty high on Staley and Goldson.
