4/1/10 Patriots draft game-you make their picks v3.0

Status
Not open for further replies.
#22 Brandon Graham OLB/DE Very good pash rusher & elite vs the run. When we play nickel he can move to DE & pin his ears back & get after it.

#44 Roger Saffold OT Vollmer & Saffold could be our bookends for the next 10 years. Saffold will be swing T this year & move to RT next year when Light moves on in FA ( Vollmer to LT )

Trade #48 to Lions for #65 + #99 +#132

#65 Alex Carrington DE Was abusing blockers in the senior bowl, may have to put on some weight to play 3-4 end for us but has the length to do it.

Trade #53 + #190 to Eagles for #70 + #87

#70 Mike Tennant C Consensus #2 C in the draft will be groomed as Koppen's replacement. Lanky at 6'6 & 300lbs, has the frame to put on more weight to match up against the huge 3-4 NT.

#87 Dennis Pitta TE Best route running TE in the draft, great hands should be able to step in day 1 & produce.

Trade #99 + #'11 4th to the Browns for #92

#92 Jason Worilds OLB If you watch his game tapes you cant help but notice how explosive his 1st step is. Could be a devastating weak side push rusher for us.

Trade #119 + #132 to the Bears for #109 + #181

#109 Mardy Gilyard WR Would be a steal if he fell this far, Pats love this guy & he would make a perfect #2.

#181 Jonique Bell RB Hugely productive in DivII, will it translate to the next level? Who knows or cares its worth a shot in the 6th round

"had to switch to Scouts rankings from here on CBS sportline kept crashing"

#205 O'brien Schofield OLB Would of been a 2nd rounder if he didnt blow out his ACL, give him a redshirt year to learn the system & recover. Also wont take a roster spot.

#229 Trade for whatever you can next year

#247 Zoltan Mesko P can't be worse than Hansen plus has a cooler name

#248 Jameson Konz WR? Insane 40 time at his size, at the very least will be a special teams demon

#250 Al Woods DT Big LSU DT, camp fodder or the next late round DT suprise? ( Pryor )

My trades (all according to draft value chart and draft order by team)

1. Patriots 48 for Titans 77, 97, 111, 148
2. Patriots 22, 148 for Bucs 35, 67, 153, 232
3. Patriots 44 for Vikings 62, 93, 128
4. Patriots 53, 119, 190, 205 for Browns 71, 92, 105
5. Patriots 71 for 49ers 79, 145
6. Patriots 93 to Saints for 95, 239
6. Patriots 97 for Seahawks 104, 176, 213
7. Patriots 128 for Lions 133, 214
8. Patriots 145 for Packers 154, 230
9. Patriots 176, 229 for Chargers 168
10. Patriots 213, 230, 250 for Texans 187
11. Patriots 231, 247 for Rams 208

So, the choices are:

35. Jared Odrick (from Bucs)
62. Ricky Sapp (from Vikings)
67. Joe Asamoah (from Bucs)
77. Brandon LaFell (from Titans)
79. Jimmy Graham (from 49ers)
92. Jacoby Ford (from Browns)
95. Eric Norwood (from Saints)
104. Aaron Hernandez (from Seahawks)
105. Brandon Spikes (from Browns)
111. Mardy Gilyard (from Titans)
133. Austen Lane (from Lions)
153. Jarrett Brown (from Bucs)
154. AJ Edds (from Packers)
168. Mitch Petrus (from Chargers)
187. George Selvie (from Texans)
208. LeGarrette Blount (from Rams)
214. Clifton Geathers
232. Freddie Barnes (from Bucs)
239. Sam Young (from Saints)
248. Patrick Stoudamire

Free agents? Joe Pawelek, Michael Hoomanawanui, Al Woods, Scott Sicko, Jeff Cottam, Abe Koroma, Reggie McClain

So, break down by offense/defense:

QB: Jarrett Brown
RB: LeGarrette Blount
TE: Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez
WR: Brandon LaFell, Jacoby Ford, Mardy Gilyard, Freddie Barnes
OL: Joe Asamoah, Mitch Petrus, Sam Young

DL: Jared Odrick, Clifton Geathers
DE/OLB: Austen Lane, George Selvie
OLB: Ricky Sapp, Eric Norwood
ILB: Brandon Spikes, AJ Edds
DB: Patrick Stoudamire

Yes, 20 draft picks.
My strategy: none of the scouts or front offices know what they're doing, so take a scattershot approach, and find 10 guys (yes 10 make the team) that are real football players.

That just put a BIG smile on my face. I wonder if BB has ever considered owning an entire round before? If you keep going with your trades, I think that he could just about own the entire 4th round.

Okay, since my draft board is about 95% complete, I was able to test it out, sticking to it no matter how it shook out. I haven't looked at others' yet so I wouldn't be compromised. Using Scouts.com:

#22 Golden Tate WR Notre Dame - I was tempted to trade up for Brandon Graham, but in the end I decided that I'm not ready for Sam Aiken to be a starting WR for us, and I don't know where Brandon Tate is in his development. I need a receiver with polish and character in case I need a week one starter.

#44 Koa Misi LB Utah - Didn't want to take him here, but it seems all my targets got snapped up quickly. No sweat, I have Misi rated high enough on my board to take him here and not feel badly about it.

#48 Rob Gronkowski TE Arizona - This, of course, is assuming his back checks out with the New England medical staff.

#53 Well, Mt. Cody is the highest-rated player on my board. But Scout.com has Colt McCoy rated here. Having missed out on Tebow, Jacksonville offers New England #74 and #108 for this pick. I accept.

#74 Matt Tennant C Boston College - I don't expect Koppen to gracefully give up his position to a fellow Eagle, but I don't think Koppen is on the team in 2011.

#108 I was looking for John Jerry - my top-rated guard - here, and he ended up going one slot before. My consolation prize is Al Woods DE LSU.

#119 Daniel Te'o-Neisham LB Washington - He'll be a core special teamer until we figure out his best role in the defense.

#190 Chris Brown RB Oklahoma - I admit I like him more than most. I have him rated ahead of a lot of RBs that are more talked-about. At a minimum, he's fantastic in the passing game. And he showed he could carry the ball very effectively when Murray got hurt.

#205 Patrick Stoudamire CB Western Illinois - The last CB on the board from my second grouping.

#229 Will Barker OT Virginia - Long, lean, quick-footed potential left tackle.

#231 Kurtis Gregory G Missouri - The thing I love about guards is how you can get quality so late.

#247 Barry Church S Toledo - Big, athletic, and violent. He'll be a core special-teamer, and he'll be the big safety in some packages, and can be the small linebacker in others.

#248 Joe Webb WR UAB - Great athlete, whom I would expect to get in the WR rotation right away. What do Jacoby Ford, Emmanuel Sanders, Brandon Lafell, Dezmon Briscoe, and Marcus Easley have in common? I have them all rated below Webb, despite his lack of WR experience, who will be drafted much earlier.

#250 Brandon Sharpe ILB Texas Tech - One of my favorite players in the draft. A violent tackling machine.

My 10 UDFAs:
Bill Stull QB Pittsburgh
Andre Anderson RB Tulane
Scott Sicko TE New Hampshire
Greg Boone TE Virginia Tech
Derek Hardman OT Eastern Kentucky
Charlie Tanner G Texas
David Pender CB Purdue
Corey Peters DE Kentucky
James Ruffin LB Northern Iowa
Whichever punter is the best available. I really wasn't paying attention to which ones were drafted.

I feel like I'm watching someone play John Madden franchise mode... LOL. 20 draftees is insane. You'd end up cutting over 2/3 of them anyways. But I appreciate the effort. I'll turn in one soon when I get some inspiration.

Good one DH44. I've tried a couple of trades but I end up with better picks just keeping the ones we have. Guess I'm just not a good trader.

#22 TRADE: Patriots send #22 + #47 to San Francisco for #13

13. Derrick Morgan, DE/OLB (Of all the OLB candidates in this draft, Morgan seems the most versatile and with the best balance of skills.)

Now I start recouping the lost pick, and then some...

#44 TRADE: Patriots send #44 to Green Bay (don't they always trade with Green Bay?) for #56 + #86

56. Alex Carrington, DE (Played at a lower level of competition, arms aren't the longest, but seems to have the body, head and heart for the Pats 3-4 DE position.)

#53 TRADE Patriots send #53 to San Francisco for #79 & 113

79. Jared Veldheer, OT (A small-school tackle with a world of potential gets a year in L'Accademia Dante before hitting center stage)

86. Eric Decker, WR (It's mighty scary to count on a WR with such a history of foot injuries, but if he's healthy, he may be the most NFL-ready receiver in the draft.)

113. Daniel Te'O-Nesheim (Solid inside-outside LB potential with good strength, mobility, and motor.)

119. Dorin ****erson, TE (Shifty H-back type should be a good complement to Crumpler)

190. Emmanuel Sanders, WR (Dart-quick little receiver who can make some plays downfield.)

205. Clifton Geathers, DE (This seems a fair spot to take a risk on an unbelievable physical specimen. If BB & Co. get him to play to even a fraction of his potential, he'll be worth the pick.)

229. Mike Kafka, QB (Not a guy who'll wow you in any particular arena, just a steady, smart game manager. I like that.)

231. Patrick Stoudamire, CB (A read-and -react corner with good ball skills and tremendous quickness)

247. Brent Bowden, P (Good directional punter. And we do not have a punter.)

248. Joe Hawley, OL (A strong and fairly nimble o-lineman who can play both OG and C. And does he ever have the beard for it. )

250. Deji Karim, RB (A steal on a nifty little change-of-pace back who should be a weapon in the return game)

i dont know y we would even look at a ss or rolle, everyone of our safeties is a solid player for us, and if we did look at a safety if would be more of a fs/cb type to cover the dallas clarks of the world. So, it would be smart to mark off myron rolle imho...earl thomas, chris cook, antrel rolle type of guy in the middle or late rounds i could see the point

OK. I'll take a shot. This rule of being within 5 makes it fairly easy:

22 - Trade to Minnesota for 30 and 93.
30: Jerry Hughes - OLB
41: Demaryius Thomas - WR (Trade up 47 + 119 + 229)
44: Jahvid Best - RB
53 - Trade down with Cleveland for 71 and 92
71: Corey Wootton - DE
88: Dennis Pitta - TE (trade up 91 + 190)
93: Jason Worilds - OLB
205: Emanuel Sanders - WR
231:Vince Oghabaase
247: Deji Karim - RB
248: Brent Bowden - P
250: Scott Sicko - TE

edit - decided to take advantage of trade down in 1st and grab another OLB in the 3rd.

I like a lot of the players, but I can't see the board shaping up that way; if anything, the Patriots have tried to FILL holes in their board, not create them.

I thought about making each pick, but I think I'd prefer to trade around a little. I'm intrigued by a lot of small school guys, but I also like some of the big names--including a few that may not be popular. Some of the players are hyped up a lot on this board, so I may not look very original, but I don't mind. I really just want to select players who I feel could help the team. Many people will disagree with many of my picks. That's okay, though, because what the heck do any of us know? We're just having fun. :p We'll see how this turns out.

- -=- -

Trade 22 (780) back to 24 (740) in return for 137 (37.5). Trade 44 (460) & 47 (430) for 26 (700) & 88 (150)

24) DE/OLB Everson Griffen

26) C/OG Maurkice Pouncey

53) CB/S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah

88) WR Andre Roberts

119) TE Tony Moeaki

190) DT/DE Al Woods

205) RB Deji Karim

229 FB John Conner

231) WR/TE/FB/LB/S Jameson Konz

247) WR AJ Jackson

248) LB Michael Johnson

250) P Mike Brandtner

- -=- -

Okay, I think I've gotten a good mix of high floor and high ceiling players. My goal was to address some of our bigger concerns while also encouraging competition at each positions, and I think after this haul the team has greater flexibility, speed, and depth. We now have the ability to begin the transition toward more of a downhill running attack, and more creativity on defense. We'll see where it takes us. :)

A bit simplistic since it includes no trades (therefore unrealistic as well), but here you go.

22 -- OLB Brandon Graham, Michigan
44 -- OT Roger Saffold, Indiana
48 -- DE Carlos Dunlap, Florida
53 -- WR Damian Williams, USC
119 - TE Dorin ****erson, Pittsburgh
190 - OLB Kavell Conner, Clemson
205 - CB David Pender, Purdue
229 - ILB Micah Johnson, Kentucky
231 - WR Danario Alexander, Missouri
247 - RB Deji Karim, Southern Illinois
248 - WR Chris Carter, UC Davis
250 - C/G Jeff Byers, USC

Flame away ... I'll try one with trades in a day or two, and maybe revise this one then as well.

Trade #22 to Vikings for #30, #93, and #161.
Trade #44, #119, #190 to Packers for #56, #86, #154.
Trade #47, #205 to Dallas for #59, #90.
Trade Matt Light to KC for #68. (Trade is not made if Pouncey is pick at 30.)
Trade Adalius Thomas to Seattle for #176.

#30 - Charles Brown OR Maurkice Pouncey - I'm torn on this one at the moment. Brown, who has experience in the ZBS and is very athletic, and Vollmer are the future at tackle; Kaczur can become a G/T backup and play G when Neal inevitably goes down. Pouncey is also an option, but I'm not too down on Koppen just yet. If Pouncey is the pick, the Light trade is not made.
#53 - Arrelious Benn - Boldin-type of WR who will go over the middle and work the intermediate part of field
#56 - Ricky Sapp - explosive pass rusher = much needed, fits BB profile physically
#59 - Alex Carrington - love this guy as a difference maker at 3-4 DE once he adds some weight
#68 - Montario Hardesty - love the way this guy plays. a reliable RB who can pound the rock and also catch the ball out of the backfield. not as explosive as a Best or Spiller, but a solid all around option who will get the job done. has NEVER fumbled in college.
#86 - Dennis Pitta - TE that is a receiving option and has reliable hands
#90 - Greg Hardy - could be the steal of the draft if he is able to stay healthy, has said he wants to play OLB in NFL
#154 - Jarrett Brown - project QB who I'm very high on. I think a few years of studying under Brady could have this guy ready to be a legitimate starting QB and great backup. Obviously, I'm not a big Hoyer guy.
#176 - Mike Williams - Take a chance on this boom or bust WR. he's got the talent and at this point in the draft the upside is too great to pass on him IMO. this is also a candidate for steal of the draft, assuming Williams can keep himself in line.
#229 - Danny Batten - another developmental OLB who could probably help on ST and is considered a great teammate
#231 - Chris Hawkins - LSU CB, battled tested in SEC, lacks ideal speed but is a good tackler, at best when in press coverage, can contribute on special teams
#247 - Brent Bowden - punter to replace Chris "thank god he's gone" Hanson
#248 - Roy Upchurch - between the tackles pound the rock type of guy. love the way he runs. Could be very useful in short yardage situations.
#250 - Ryan Perriloux - i'm just not that big of a fan of Hoyer after seeing what he did in college. Perriloux is a high risk high reward type who is worth taking a chance on here IMO. Highly touted recruit who has the skill set to be in the NFL, but is he mentally fit to play in the NFL? Has he grown up and matured? Unlikely that BB goes anywhere near this guy, but I would take the chance. Maybe we can strike gold again with one of these QB's like we did with Cassel.

Draft Breakdown:

Losses: OT Matt Light (if Brown is picked at 30), OLB Adalius Thomas, P Hanson

Additions:
QB: Brown, Perriloux
RB/FB: Hardesty, Upchurch
WR: Benn, M.Williams
TE: Pitta
OL: Brown or Pouncey
DL: Carrington
DE/OLB: Sapp, Hardy, Batten
CB: Hawkins
P: Bowden

Update the Browns traded 105 and 137, to the
Eagles. So if you were thinking of trading with the Browns,as I was, take that into consideration.

Different version with the other list...

TRADE 22, 53, and 229 with Bucs for 35, 42, 101, 153 (Pats = 1150, Bucs = 1156.2)
35 Jared Odrick, DE, Penn State
42 Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas
44 Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
48 Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
101 Syd'Quan Thompson, CB, California
TRADE 119, 190 with Giants for 115, 221 (Pats = 71.4, Giants = 67)
110 Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona
TRADE 153, 231 with Titans for 148 (Pats = 32.2, Titans = 32.2)
148 Marshall Newhouse, OT, TCU
205* O'Brien Schofield, OLB, Wisconsin
221 Vince Oghobaase, DE, Duke
229 Deji Karim, RB, Southern Illinois
247* Andre Anderson, RB, Tulane
248* Seji Ajirotutu, WR, Fresno State
250* Brent Bowden, P, Virginia Tech

I'll try it again, still with no trades, to see what it may look like going with an offensive player with the first pick.

22 -- TE Jermaine Gresham, Oklahoma
44 -- OLB Jerry Hughes, TCU
48 -- WR Arrelious Benn, Illinois
53 -- OL Vladimir Ducasse, UMass
119 - DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, Washington
190 - CB Nolan Carroll, Maryland
205 - DE/OLB George Selvie, South Florida
229 - C Ted Larsen, North Carolina St
231 - RB Deji Karim, Southern Illinois
247 - OL Will Barker, Virginia
248 - OLB Larry Hart, Central Arkansas
250 - TE Mickey Shuler, Penn State

I was going to put a punter such as Bowden or Dodge in one of those last picks, but figure the Pats will bring in a vet and an UDFA instead.
At first I had WR Golden Tate at 1.22 with a TE such as Pitta, ****erson or Moeaki at 4.119, which left 2.48 open for Wooten, Misi or Sapp.
After getting dizzy from all my flip-flopping I'll go with this for now.
