Three days in April changed Patriots' season - Christopher Gasper's Blog - Boston sports news - Boston.com

Gasper has said it as good as you can to sum up the 2010 Patriots team.

One thing I have wondered.....what if the draft was not changed and stayed with the normal 2 day event instead of 3?

....I wonder if the Patriots would have still had the awesome collection of draft picks that they got in the 3 day and maybe other teams could have made different moves had it gone the normal 3 rounds in the first day
....we will never know but if there is one thing I am glad that Goodell has done as head of the league it's the change to the 3 day draft which gave Belichick even more time to create his masterpiece of a draft which certainly may end up being the best draft in the history of the New England Patriots storied franchise.

Never thought about the preparation angle, it has always been contended that giving BB too much time at preparing for anything is bad for the other guys...

Oddly that change was supposed to be a benefit to the less organized and prepared, giving them time to regroup... Unfortunately, if you give disorganized and unprepared people more time to think they usually just use it to overthink...

The 2010 draft certainly kicked the rebuild into high gear. What it did that most weren't expecting was potentially enable him to retool the offense while rebuilding the defense. However, the seminal moment in this season was the jettisoning of Moss, period. And a couple of things had to yet happen for him to be in position to pull that trigger. Welker had to be viable, Branch had to be available, and someone had to be found to fill the gaping hole created when Faulk went down and Mankins chose principle...

Indeed. Outside of his contention that Welker and Moss shouldn't be counted with the 2007 draft, that was a hell of an article by Gasper.

And speaking of extra time to prepare, this year the Pats will have 2 picks in the first round, then have almost a full day to plan their usage of Carolina's pick which will be the first of the second day. Even if they trade that pick, they'll have plenty of time to take offers and milk it for all it's worth.

This year has shown that it is easier to mold fresh clay than to mold already formed pottery.

I think BB has been reborn in a way. Count me in as one who really didn't like the idea of BB not having a DC originally. It's now clear why. Boy, was I wrong!

I didn't like it either because I thought he would be overstretched. However, as the year has gone on, I think he has gotten more and more help from Patricia. Notice how Patricia stood close to BB on the sideline through the early and middle parts of the year and how he has now begun to get some separation from him with the exception of some key plays. Patricia has learned more and more about how Belichick wants it done. IMO, he's starting to take over the play calling, albeit with Belichick's blessing.

The early returns on this draft have been amazing. And I think there's a lot of room for growth.

Spikes has been a solid two-down guy, but everyone seems to think that's his limit. He's been abused in the play-action game early on, but he's also one of the most instinctive players BB has ever seen. Once he adjusts to the pro game, I think he's going to be a beast. That INT on Sanchez at the goal line seemed like the type of play we could see regularly from him.

And as amazing as McCourty's been, he can get better, and has shown a desire to get better. I'm not sure I can even comprehend how good he could be.

I think Cunningham will get a bit stronger and grow into a bigger role with this defense too. He's done very well this year, but he's also missed the QB several times. I think that has to do with the speed of the game still being a bit fast for him, and him desperately lunging to make a play. As he matures, things will slow down, he won't fall for the fakes and take an extra second to line a guy up before knocking him down. But I'm very impressed with him.

Love the TEs, and lets not forget Taylor Price too. He showed some flashes of potential last week. He'll definitely have a chance to make an impact next season.

If there is one person from the 2010 draft with boom/bust potential it is Cunningham.

I am hoping an offseason with Woicik will make him much stronger and tougher.

However if the Pats take 2 DE/OLB types early in the 2011 draft. Romeus and Kerrigan maybe, then that will tell me a lot about how they view Cunningham long term.

Yeah, I was kind of concerned about this pick initially. Then again, I was also concerned about the McCourty pick. :bricks:

But I think he's been excellent at setting the edge, which is always a concern with these conversion projects. I'd be surprised if BB took two guys early, though I expect at least 1.

Then again, I've also learned to expect the unexpected with BB. Or don't expect the expected. Or whatever. You know what I mean :p

Just float a rumor that one team is looking to trade with the Patriots for that pick (#33) to grab a player that is still available and force another panicked team to overpay in a trade ( say a 2011 second rounder and 2012 first rounder)....
