    Major Needs in Red
    Depth Needs in Blue

LT - Matt Light will probably re-sign. If he doesn't, Volmer could slide over and then RT would become a need. I don't see Light leaving our team though.
LG - Mankins hasn't played at all this year, and most people haven't even noticed.
C - Koppen. meh. Don't think we'll be tampering with this.
RG - Neal. Getting up there in age and struggles with injuries. Definitely needs a replacement.
RT - Vollmer has looked great so far.

Our entire OLine could use some depth. Not an immediate need, but we'll pick up a couple OLinemen in the mid rounds. It's hard to say we need a specific position on Oline since BB moves them around so much, but it's definitely a spot where we need some youngsters to groom

QB - We already have one of the best

RB - An obvious need. Faulks career may be over, Fred Taylor can't stay healthy so he might be done as well, Morris has had that same issue the entire time he's been with us. Maroney is gone. So we'll be left with BJGE and Woodhead, two players who are better suited as 3rd down backs, or back ups. I doubt either could be a workhorse for a 16 game season. I expect a veteran Free Agent pick up, plus an early draft pick either in the mid-late 1st or with one of our 2nd rounders.

WR - Moss is a question mark. No one knows what will happen right now. Even if Moss does leave, we still have Welker, Tate, Edelman, Taylor Price... A good young crop of Receivers. After the wastes known as Chad Jackson and Bethel Johnson, plus the high ratio of WR busts in the 1st round, I don't think we'll be touching a WR early in the draft. If Moss leaves, we'll most likely pick up a veteran WR in FA.

TE - 2 young stars and a veteran already on our roster. We don't need to look at TE.

SS/FS - Already used two high draft picks on Chung and Meriweather in recent years. Plus we have good depth at the position.

CB - McCourtey has looked very good so far this season against some good competition, and he should only get better and better with experience. He could be a #1, or atleast a solid #2 CB. Butler, Wheatley, and Wilhite all look like busts so far that have been a huge weakness on our defense. Bodden played well last year, but we've seen what happens when he gets injured. Against pass happy teams that are so successful these days, you need a lot of solid Corners. Bodden and McCourtey should be a nice duo, but we'd always be one injury away from being torched all game. Don't be surprised if BB picks another CB if a good one (Peterson or Akumara) falls into our lap and there isn't good value elsewhere

ILB - Solid. Spikes and Mayo should start for many years. Guyton provides good depth. We couldnt find room on our roster for last years 3rd rd pick Tyrone McKenzie, so I doubt we'll take another ILB in the early rounds of the draft. If anything we'll pick up a veteran FA to help bring along the young players.

OLB - Pass Rush has been our defenses major weakness for a few seasons now. Going into this season with TBC, Ninkovich, and Cunningham was atrocious. Ninkovich is absolutely terrible in every aspect of the game and probably shouldn't be starting on any NFL team. Crable has gone a few seasons without seeing the field and has injury problems. Unless he shows something this year, he'll probably be cut again. Cunningham has looked decent so far and shown potential. He has ideal size and a high motor. I expect him to start by mid-season and continue developing. He's looked good against the run and pass. TBC has already proven he's a solid starter that can get pressure on the QB. He doesnt hold up against the run as well as you'd like though, and might be more of a depth/situational type player who got the starting role by default. He's also going to be 31 by the time next season starts. Even if TBC and Cunningham solidify starting spots, we will still need depth as Ninkovich and Crable are better suited for the practice squad. This is somewhere we go could early with our Top 10 pick from the Raiders if Robert Quinn is available and grades out well, or later in the 1st rd with someone like Ryan Kerrigan. This is probably our teams single biggest need right now.

NT - Wilfork was re-signed, and we recently used a high 2nd rd pick on his back up. Not a Need.

DE - T.Warren, G.Warren, Ron Brace, Mike Wright, Pryor. We have really good depth at the position and G.Warren has played better than most people thought he would so far. Brace and Pryor are still developing and both have done decent. Ty Warren should be back form injury next year. It's hard to tell weather this is a big need, but Belichick puts a huge emphasis on DLine so if the question even needs to be asked, then I'm sure he'll be looking at DLine in the draft. Brace will probably spell at DE/NT next year, and eventually take over the starting position when BB thinks it's time to let Ty Warren go. G.Warren is only a temporary fix at the other DE spot, that was vacated by Seymour and that's where we need help. Luckily, this is an extremely deep draft for 34 DE's compared to most years. There's a high chance that we go after a DE with our Top 10 pick from the Raiders.

If we don't address " Pass Rush" this draft we never will and another lost season.

Needs for me are so hard to predict for this team in my opinion because they are so young on D. So many what if's. What if Cunningham emerges? What if merriwether regresses? what if McCourty turns out as we hope?

I would say C and G are a need only because of age specially neal and his injuries. But in saying that connoly stepped in well so far and if mankins comes back you would assume he would slot in to neal's spot... making it essentially less of a need.

For me it's C/G and OLB are the only two that i can see as definate needs.

Now WR, RB, CB, Tackle e.t.c i think are fringe/depth needs but even RB is predicated on how a full season of BJGE and Woodhead go to whether we spend a high pick on the possition.

I've been predicting one since 06. Just for the heck of it. I went thru my posts from around draft time the last few years to see how bad I've been. In 06 I wanted T.Hali and A.Hodge. Meh. Then in 07 I wanted Anthony Spencer. Took him a couple of years. But, a good player. And, in 09 Connor Barwin. I'm going with Robert Quinn this year.

Need to think continually about O & D lines dependent on who is available, but if a really good RB that fits into our system, that may be an upgrade as well.

The pass rush is a consistent need, and can be addressed as well... with 4 picks in the top 64 a lot of needs can be met, on paper anyways.

I'm thinking safety is a need. Our young CBs need good coverage help over the top and they're not really getting it. Sanders coverage abilities, modest as they were, appear to have deteriorated. Meriweather has gone Maroney on us. Chung can't cover very well yet. Who knows what Page can do unless we're playing Oakland (thought we're probably about to find out against Marshall).

Unless Sergio Brown (P/S) Bret Lockett or Josh Barrett have some serious hidden coverage skills, I think we might see even a 2nd rounder go that way.

Agree on pretty much everything else.

I don't think the RBBC was ever going to be renovated with even a high 2nd rounder, though. There were a few guys this draft from the late 2nd and the 3rd who could have filled well. We'll probably dip into a similar mid-round pool in 2011 and, of course, re-animate another aging FA.

OLB - we might actually see two different guys there. One might be around 6'2"/255 who's great against the run, accomplished in coverage and can rush a bit. The other might be a slightly bigger guy who can set the edge well, but who's main job is to pass rush (coverage skills optional). Or maybe one or the other, depending on how Crable turns out.

Since 2000, BB has drafted 1.7 DBs per year on average (sometimes two guys who turn out to be only 1.7 guys). I could see another CB in the 4th-7th rounds in addition to the safety.

Which brings me to one of my first sleeper binkys - CB Richard Sherman of Stanford. 6'2"/200, converted from WR last year and had a couple picks, a few PDs and tackles. If he's not fast enough to make it as a corner, he might still have the coverage skills for safety.

Solved: QB, TE, WR, WR, LT, NT, ILB, ILB, DE, SS, FS, CB

Need a starter: RB, OG, OT, OLB

    Need youth: OC

Need veteran depth: DE, OLB, CB

It's ironic that even with our struggles on D, I think we should be drafting mostly on Offense. What we don't need on D is more high talent, high potential kids. We need some veterans to play the Alge Crumpler role, especially in the secondary.

I think we draft depth on both lines, some talent for our aging RBBC, plus a stud OLB.

Each DB we draft in 2011 is just going to push another young DB off the roster, which is fine if you're interested in musical chairs.

BTW, I think Dan Connolly has been the most pleasant surprise of this young season. The guy has been a real find. No small task to make everyone forget about Mankins so quickly and noiselessly.

Made the changes i think. If Mankins is back then we just need depth behind him and Connoly as Neal is on the way out. If not then yes we will be needing an OG starter. OT i think is more in the need youth than need starter as we have Light and Vollmer there now and will need someone to come in after light goes. I really only see 3 - 5 places on this d up for grabs for a rookie next year. CB if we get some extreme talent (but not if bodden is back), DE only if the person can beat out brace or warren, OG if we no longer have Neal or Mankins and the obvious one is OLB but only if they can beat out Cunningham. Lastly is the most obvious impact possition up for grabs which is RB where you could plug an Ingram in from the get go and have a special running attack.

Have you seen how bad a center Mike Pouncey has been for FL this year? He will be lucky to go in the 3rd round.

    Mini-Mock Draft
    Jake Locker
    Robert Quinn
    AJ Green
    Patrick Peterson
Ryan Mallet or Andrew Luck(if he declares)
    Adrian Clayborn
    Cameron Heyward
    Marcell Dareus

The Pats will most likely be picking right around the spot where the two 3-4 DE's are projected right now. Coming away with Heyward or Dareus is looking very possible at the moment.

As long as he is good enough as raw material that can be coached up we want him to slip as much as possible. Picking up slightly damaged or undeveloped goods is a great way to get value, we got a bargain with Gronk because of his back, otherwise he's likely a 1st round pick.

In my opinion, New England's needs heading into the 2011 draft, if there is one.

Defensive end, outside linebacker, corner back, running back, offensive lineman and quarterback

Possible players on the Patriots' radar... Patrick Peterson, Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Cameron Heyward and Bruce Carter.

I don't see corner as a big need. It doesn't look pretty right now, but we have to remember that Bodden is out for the season. He will come back next year and compete for a starting job. I also expect Butler to bounce back at some point during the season. Now we can't count out the chance that Belichick will take the BPA on his board and Patrick Peterson could be that guy. I just don't think that the Patriots need another starting corner.

I disagree. I don't want to rely on Darius Butler becoming a better player. That's like relying on Terrence Wheatley (also a second round selection) to become a better player. And Devin McCourty might have made Leigh Bodden expendable next off-season.

If Patrick Peterson is available, I'm selecting him with Oakland's first round pick. If not him, then the best available defensive end.

You want another CB, but think Bodden might be expendable. Am I the only one that fails to see any logic? I'd rather have Bodden and McCourty starting and use that high first round pick on a pass-rusher or something.

He wants Patrick Peterson, because Peterson is supposed to be the best CB prospect since... Charles Woodson?

I can see that some of you are complacent with mediocrity. That's fine. You fail to see logic because you fail to look at it with an open-mind. You're content with what's already on the roster, I'm not.

Yes, Bodden is expendable because he might not have been re-signed had Belichick known that McCourty would be available and prove to be an adequate starter this season. He and Bodden play on the same side of the field. If McCourty proves by season's end that it's his job to lose. Why keep Bodden who New England had to overpay to re-sign and is older? That's illogical.
