The draft is great but just as important are veteran free agents. This is one of the first lists I have seen. With all the extra picks it makes a lot of sense to trade for veterans as well as sign a few.

As I'd said in a different thread, I would target a veteran running back such as Joseph Addai who I believe will be an unrestricted free agent. Because a lot of the other standout running backs, Cedric Benson, Ahmad Bradshaw, Ronnie Brown, Michael Bush, Jamaal Charles and DeAngelo Williams, could be franchised. And these teams need these players either because they're their starter or a vital backup.

Yeah i see what you mean... I really think Bush is the back that i would want for this team tho he seems like a great smash and bash runner. Then again i don't want to be selling BJGE short he has had success in short oppertunities

I would like Bush as well. However, McFadden is injury prone and Oakland won't allow Bush to go for that reason. And I read that the team is high on both running backs so it would be wishful thinking anyways.

Surprisingly few guys on that list who I like for the Pats - and all of them are highly likely to be retained by their current team or go to another team willing to give them an over-the-moon contract.

Not saying that there won't be a 2nd/3rd-tier guy or three brought into camp next season, but I'm thinking we're almost better off just continuing with the youth movement through the draft, especially while we have the picks to get some serious impact players.

    Glancing ahead at the offseason

    1) OLB/DE Ray Edwards - The Patriots showed him more respect that Allen, for the most part Light was straight up against Allen but Vollmer was given help against Edwards.

You heard it here first, he is young (25), big and immediately adds a pass rusher as well as flexibility across the defensive front.

    Ray Edwards

    2) Extend Mankins

    3) Since it is topical, sign Moss back at a discounted rate. He learns his lesson and accepts being the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th fiddle

    Draft
Round 1 - add a 3-4 DE and an OT
Rounds 2 & 3 - add quality depth based on BPA

what has he shown you that leads you to believe that he has the abilty to play OLB for us. Lamarr Woodley would be a better safer choice at that position. I would love to extend Mankins but resigning Moss is simply a short term answer at a position that should be addressed for the long term via FA(Vincent Jackson) or the Draft (AJ Green/Jonathan Baldwin) the depth is their at DE as being shown this season after losing our number 1. The other pick should be used to upgrade the OL or possibly RB.

Just a gut feel.. how is that? Woodley is almost certain to be franchised.

Edwards is about the same size as Willie McGinest, 6'5 - 268, he ran a 4.8 in college which is about the same as Vrabel and Colvin.

I think we'll follow the pattern of last year and mainly resign our own free agents and add maybe 1-2 outside free agents that will eventually make the roster (Crumpler & Warren). Bringing in all these draft picks will limit the amount of Free Agents the Pats sign.

Here's a list of the Pats 2011 Free Agents and what I think should be done with them.
Logan Mankins LG (Hopefully Resgin to 5-6 yr deal)
Matt Light OT (Should try to resign to 2-3 yr deal)
Fred Taylor RB (He'll be 35yrs old next year. Let him go)
Kevin Faulk RB (35yrs old next year. Coming off injury sadly time to let him go)
Jarrod Page S (Traded a draft pick for him. Sign to 2-3 yr deal)
Sammy Morris RB (34yrs old next year. Invisible except on ST this year. Let him go)
Gerard Warren DL (33yrs old next year. Sign him to 1 year deal and bring him to camp)
Quinn Ojinnaka OG/T (Sign him to 1 year deal and bring to camp.)
BenJarvus Green-Ellis RB (Resign to 3-4 year deal)
Tracy White LB/ST (Resign to 1-2yr deal ST beast)
Ryan Wendall OL (Resign to 1 yr bring to camp)
Kyle Arrington CB/ST (Resign to 1 yr bring to camp)
Danny Woodhead RB (Resign to 3-4 year modest deal. The new Faulk)

With Allen on the other side, Edwards has seen a lot of single blocking and he has done basically nothing against single blocking. Very sad!

Faulk, 1 year vet minimum plus incentives, same as this season.
Gerard Warren, 2 year deal with incentives.
BJGE - 2 year deal with incentives.
Arrington, 2 year deal at reserve CB (#3-4) money with incentives. [Caveat: if Arrington continues to play as he is, he could see some time at FS next season, which may change his contract picture.]
Woodhead, Faulk at his peak money, 4-6 years.

Edwards saw the help shifted to his side against NE, Allen got to boss run Light a bit, but Edwards drew the attention.

Actually Faulk's deal this year was $1 Mil in salary (Guaranteed because he played in 1st game) and $1 Mil in signing bonus. So he's making $2 Mil this year on IR. Good for him but I don't see the Pats doing that again. I think it will depend on if they sign a free agent RB and resign Lawfirm and Woody (shouldn't be too hard).

I would love to sign LeRon McClain, Vonta Leach, Mike Tolbert or Jason Snelling.
We absolutely must have an elite FB here in order to maximize our running game.

Atlanta's Justin Blalock would also look great in a Pats uni.
He can play either guard spot & RT, is very smart & of impeccable character.
Ryan Kalil can start at Center for me any day,
and Jared Gaither could be an improvement over Matt Light.

Is Haloti Ngata still unsigned at year's end?
I don't even want to think about getting my hopes up for him.
Cullen Jenkins might be a decent consolation prize.

I don't care how tall LaMarr Woodley is or isn't, or in what 3-4 system he's played,
I would absolutely love to have him on this defense.
I wonder if Robert Mathis could switch from DE in Indy to OLB here?
Tamba Hali now has a year's experience in Romeo's system.
I think that Tennessee's Jacob Ford is worth persuing as a DE to OLB convert,
and one of the binkies from the '06 draft, Manny Lawson, might also be avail.

There are also some interesting names at WR & CB,
but I'd rather spend most of my avail. FA $$ on the positions above (FB, OL, DE, OLB),
and use the rest on depth players at WR (Dante Stallworth part deux?) & CB (Ike Taylor?).

I think Alge Crumpler had been doing a fantastic job this year as a pseduo-FB coming down the line in motion and blowing up guys to make a path for the RB's.

Eric Kettani FB from Navy should be coming back off of Military Reserve next year so he will be in the mix.

I think the Offensive philosphy has just changed over the years since the Pats haven't had a FB since Heath Evans in 2008. They have used another postion other than RB to fill that need. Dan Connolly has been doing it some this year.

Time flies, some former binkies are becoming free agents.. some names to consider.

    OLB - Cameron Wimbley
    Kamerion Wimbley

    S - Eric Weddle
    Eric Weddle

WR - Steve Smith, WR, Giants
    Steve Smith

    Stewart Bradley, OLB
    Stewart Bradley

    Brian Leonard - RB/FB
    Brian Leonard

Weddle is a pretty solid player and has some versatility, he would be a nice fit as a 3rd S / 5th CB.
