I know that the 2009 Comp picks haven't been announced yet, but I wanted to do a quick tally so far:

    Signed by the Pats:
Fred Taylor - was released by the Jaguars
Chris Baker - was released by the Jets
Shawn Springs - was released by the Redskins

Pats Free Agents signed by other teams:
    Lonnie Paxton - Denver - 5 yr / 5.5 million = $1.1 million per year
    Jabar Gaffney - Denver - 4 yr/$10 million = $2.5 million per year
    Lamont Jordan - Denver - 2 yr/ 2.5 million deal = $1.25 million per year

    Still UFA:
    Wesley Britt - OT
    Rosie Colvin - OLB
Heath Evans - FB - Saints - 2yr/ Terms unknown currently.
    Rodney Harrison - SS
Larry Izzo - LB/ Special Teams
    Deltha O'Neal - CB
    Lewis Sanders - CB/S
    Junior Seau - OLB/ILB
    Kenny Smith - DT
    Barry Stokes - OT
    Tank Williams - S/LB
    Mike Wright - NT/DE

RFA: Pierre Woods - 2nd round tender

Nice post. I was forgetting that they were all released from their teams. I like it.

As it stands right now, it would be a 6th and three 7ths. But that can all change depending on if they make their teams and such. I think that there will be a few more who get signed away. Mike Wright being one of them. I think that Denver, KC or AZ might pick him up.

Speaking of compensatory picks, we should be hearing from Adamjt13

any day now with his 2009 projections. The official picks will come out

March 22 to 25 at the NFL meetings.

How do you figure that? We lose four free agents and sign three. That is a net loss of one.

Spacecrime - As was mentioned, players who are released do NOT count in the determination of Compensatory Picks. I am surprised that you have forgotten that because you've been a part of these types of threads in the past.

The memory is the second thing to go. I forgot what the first thing was.

I guess I should know that being released wasn't being a free agent, but somehow I don't.

I guess my memory isn't what it used to be. I seem to forget a lot. I guess I should know that being released wasn't beng a free agent, but somehow I don't.

But then, my memory isn't what it used to be. Did I mention that?

Now with Evans officially signed by the Saints, the Pats are in line for 4 comp picks in 2010, granted right now, only one of them would be higher than the 7th round. Although Mike Wright signing elsewhere would change that. Do you think that the Pats are actually trying to accumulate comp picks for the uncapped year's draft? They seem to have a FA philosophy, either acumulate comp picks, (like last year) or go hog wild (signing Thomas, Stallworht & company) like the year before. Does this mean that the Pats will be heavy players in the uncapped FA market?

I said I was senile, not insane.

But now I do remember a lot of discussion about players who are cut vice those who reach free agency via completing their contract.

That will really work to the Pats advantage that the guys they signed were released ... wonder why you just didn't say that to begin with .... :D

    One thing I DO remember,

    all too vividly:

I went to the Patriots Hall of Fame yesterday for the first time. In the movie on the third floor, they showed Hamilton's "roughing the passer" phantom foul in the 1976 playoff game, and my blood pressure immediately rose to dangerous levels. What a horrible call.

(Then I came home and watched the Celtics/Cavs game, and was treated to another round of biased officiating. That blocking call against Moore was absolutely unbelievable.)

But I not only remember the 76 game and that horrible call, the name Ben Dreith is burned into my memory. Even more than Larry Barnett.

Even though the Pats have signed 6 UFAs to date from other

teams, none of them will fit into the formula since they had

been released. On the other hand, some of the players the

Pats lost should qualify resulting in two or three late round picks

    next year.

Which is true every year looking a year ahead. Its nothing new. Except some of the FAs are really great players.
