It is somewhat misleading to read that Miguel lists us as having 36 signed with $52M available, so we are fine. First, Vrabel's dead money and that of other dead money that will be there is not accounted for. Also, many players (at least a dozen) listed are not likely to make the 2009 roster. On the good side, the 2009 rookies aren't listed. I revised and ended up with 32 players coming back. I have not included any RFA's except LeVoir who will almost certainly be tendered.

I think that we are in normal shape, except for the situation on the lines, where so many have contracts that are up, including Seymour, Wilfork, Green, almost all the interior linemen and almost all the tight ends.

As I have indicated, extending Wilfork and Green would go a long way toward 2010 roster stability on defense. On the offense, I suppose the best that could be done in 2009 is to extend Neal and/or sign a long-term deal with Johnson or Hochstein.

    OBSERVATIONS
    1) At $1M a roster spot and $6M for end of the year stuff ($25M or so), that still leaves us with $20M-$25M for top players, presuming there is a cap at all.
    2) We are fine at QB, RB, WR, CB and S.
    3) We are very thin at TE, OG, and DL.
    4) We could be fine at LB, depending on Crable.
    5) We have no kickers, punters or long snappers.

Ragging on Miguel is not going to be a popular move. Worry about 2010 when 2010 comes. This is 2009. The guy does this for charity, can you give him a break?

Vrabel doesn't have any dead money in 2010. 2009 was his last season...

Honestly you've got the roster equivalent of OCD mg.

You can track Miguel back to 2001 when this site was still new. I made alot of posts back then that have gone into internet oblivion.

I know Miguel will be OK, I just wonder about the families that rely on the Bread of Life Foundation to get by. I think he does a great job with his pages and maybe people shouldn't be so quick to criticize someone who puts himself out there for a worthy cause.

This is not all that derogatory towards Miguel in the big scale of things on this board.. it is more an observation than anything else..

I don't think mg meant to rag on Miguel at all - I think he was just getting into 2010 a bit and what we are looking at.

I tend to agree - worry about 2009 first, just as in the Wilfork situation, he is under contract this year and can be franchised next, two years is a long time, while I would love to see an extension it is a true must.

Now - I challenge everyone reading this and all those that use anything Miguel write to DONATE TO BREAD OF LIFE. I sure will put my money where my mouth is....

I think a team has to look at the next year as well as the current year... Obviously the current year is always MOST important..but if one wishes to just tunnel vision the current year..a lot can be missed. There is nothing at all wrong with a bit of looking at 10...the bIG problem with that is whether it will be uncapped or not...so one really has to look at both scenarios.

I am NOT ragging on Miguel. I am discussing how other are intepreting Miguel's numbers.

Many are posting about the effect of 2009 roster moves on 2010. Many are also discussing the 2010 CBA situation and its effect on 2009 roster decisions. 2010 Salary, bonus, and RFA status may or may not affect 2009 roster decisions. I think they do.

I do understand that many want to make 2009 decisions without considering 2010 and the future. For example, many folks viewed the draft with regard to help in 2009. Many view other roster decisions in the same way.

The reality is that the patriots are one of a very few franchises that make decisions for the current year, while at the same time focusing on the future.

If folks have no interest in discussing the future, then I would suggest not posting to threads discussing Miguel's posted 2010 cap effects.
