-Karlos Dansby - LB - young but experienced. Exactly what our defense needs. Played in the 34.

-Bertrand Berry - DL - veteran depth ?

-Terrell Suggs - LB - young with experience like Dansby. Sugg production has dropped every year he's been in the league.

-Chris Gamble - CB - we let Asante go because he was too much money. Gamble won't demand THAT much and would tighten our pass defense up.

-Dunta Robinson - CB - probably tired of losing in Houston and looking for change of scenery with a more winning team. I wonder what his price tag will be considering his injury history.

-Jabari Greer - CB - Starting #2 CB for the Bills. They used a first rounder and drafted Leodis McKelvin this year so they probably won't be willing to throw much money at Greer.

-Mark Columbo,Jordan Gross,Mark Tausher,Jon Runyan - RT - Kaczur isn't cutting it and either needs to be on the bench or moved inside to RG. I'd rather pick up a FreeAgent RT and draft defensively... take an old veteran so we can hold off using a draft pick on one for the next couple of years.

Here is the cap hits for 2009, we have about 24 million with about 37 players under contract.

    http://www.patscap.com/futureyears.html

It's fine to specualte who we could be after and who would fit our schemes.

But as everyone knows, BB has shown pretty good loyalty to the guys who have been around for a while, and has been ruthless in getting rid of some vets as well.

So nothing will surprise me at all.

I think we'll re-sign James Sanders to 3 year deal and let Rodney Harrison go. He's too old. He'll go the Junior Seau route.

Then draft another SS in this years draft in the 3-4 round range. It's a deep draft for Safeties luckily.

Gafney will probably re-sign as well. For a good price. I remember him openly stating that money is not the most important thing out there.

Bruschi has one year left on his contract and could probably stay another year. I think we'll keep him for veteran leadership and cut Mike Vrabel... who's making a lot more money than Bruschi. Plus Crable should be ready to step in at OLB next year.

Bart Scott, Channing Crowder, and Angelo Crowell are also Free Agents after this year. They could be options at ILB. If not than we need another ILB in rd 1 or 2 of this years draft.

I have to disagree with the idea of cutting vrabel. When has he shown that he is slowing? Plus he would be likely to rework his deal to stick around.

Vrabel is making $2.2M in 2009 at OLB. Tedy will make $1.9M at ILB...

Dead cap (amortization) is sunk cost.

There are lots of FA every year who even if good players may not fit this system. And it can take those who can the better part of a whole season to learn it. Crable may be ready next season or never more than a depth player if that...same can be said for all drafted developmental players who don't start out of the gate and even some who do.

Predicting Rodney's demise has become message board fodder. Bill is paying him $3M in salary alone with little dead cap this season so he doesn't seem to see things as some fans do. Rodney is a FA in 2009 and if he takes the kind of deals Seau did, and he likely would to play nowhere but here, he could well be back a lot cheaper than Tedy...

The Pats will probably get some LTBE credits unless a miracle happens. But they still will have to sign 43 players (with knowledge that the only the top 51 count until September of next year). But they also have players of their own to take care of. Primarily Wilfork, Green, Gostkowski, Hobbs, Mankins, and David Thomas. There are others as well. Much of this will be decided by what happens with the CBA.

More likely both stay on in reduced roles, and then head off into the sunset together after '09.

Of course, you guys know me as a die-hard Cowboys fan...I REALLY hope Jerry resigns this guy, why? It's not only b/c he's a very, very good RT(he's shut down some of the best pass rushers-last year on a bum ankle, he shut down the Packers' pass rushing stud Aaron Kampman), but he's one nasty SOB. He brings alot of fire, leadership, and nastiness on the field.

We have capable young guys who I think can replace him OK, but his intangibles will be sorely missed if he's gone.

I'm willing to bet you guys my house that Belichick WILL make a move to this guy next year.

I pretty sure that Channing Crowder is going to be a UFA. I have heard BB talk about him in the past, and would be a great replacement for Tedy.

    Positional wish list....

    1. Veteran back up QB (I'll be fine with resigning Cassel too unless the rest of the season goes worse).

    2. Shut down corner a la Nnamdi Asomugha (worth every single penny of $12 mil a year) or maybe Bryant McFadden if the Steelers tag Farrior.

    3. Tight end... Watson is killing me.

Nice punters on the FA list, but I hope the Pats don't need to use one too much next year.

Want to see Guyton and Mayo mature in the linebacker positions.

Want to see big steps from the rookie corners.

Want Sanders back at safety and Merriweather next to him.

Want a healthy Brady and the committee of running backs currently on roster.

He is my clubhouse leader at this point and personal binkie. ILB of Mayo, Crowder, Guyton and Bruschi is pretty good. This would allow them to focus on S, OLB, DT and CB (the only other needs on defense.

channing crowder is one of the most underrated LB's in the game. the guy simply makes plays. would be shocked if miami let him go, but wouldnt be shocked if BB went after him

Someone needs to re-check this because it is wrong. First, Terrell Owens is not a free agent. Second, Suggs isn't on the list. Third, the Pats cut Ryan Claridge his 1st or 2nd second season in the league which was two or three years ago. Anbody else see anything wrong with this list?

OK, there's a lot of things right, but when you see Steve Weatherford listed on the Patriots...

It's KFFL, so it's decent, but by no means comprehensive or accurate. I usually do a run-through of the NFLPA database to determine free agents in January, and that's a lot more accurate than this, which just uses whatever info KFFL has in its database.

FWIW, there was a BSPN article that basically says that off the field, Asomugha is like Adalius Thomas (e.g., very active in the Oakland community). It sounds like we'd be doing him a huge favor if Belioli replaced that awful black-and-silver uniform with a much better looking blue-and-silver one. :) [The question is--can they afford it?]

    A fine analysis!

Personally, I don't speculate about other team's free agents until they actually become free agents. Most end up being re-signed or tendered. And those stars who choose free agency usually do so because they want lots of money. I don't speculate about trading for other team's players until we know that they are available and at what price. This saves a lot of energy for me :)

I do speculate about our players who are free agents after this year or next. I presume that unrestricted free agents are gone until they re-sign. I assume that restricted free agents stay (as almost all we want do). This off-season we must deal with the fact that most of our defensive backs are free agents (O'neal, Sanders, Sanders and Harrison. In 2010, it is the year of the defensive linemen with Green, Seymor and Wilfork eligible for free agency. I would think we need to try to extend them after this season, if we wish to retain their services.
