....and win the Super Bowl the year after a SB loss. Personally, I think this is tougher than going 19-0. Given the devastation of the SB42 loss, I'd say it would be one of the toughest achievements in NFL history.

Its definately going to be TONS tougher getting to the AFC Championship game this year,Let alone the Super Bowl.

I think there will be enough improving teams this year to make the 2008 season VERY challenging for the New England Patriots,Especially on a near totally revamped defense outside of the front 3

What the Pats need to do is forget about the '72 Dolphins and concentrate on improving their own dynasty by winning the Super Bowl for themselves and not a 36 year old undefeated team.

Going undefeated next year is obviously tougher as it includes the SB too.

Re: 2008 Pats need to match 1972 Dolphins....

Agreed. We're still the best team in the league and everyone on the team is mentally tough enough to not only move on from the brutal SB loss, but use it as motivation.

The time is ripe for dynasty part II, the general competition in the NFL is weak right now and there aren't any dominating defenses that can really get in our way. Colts and Chargers will continue to be the main threats, but neither are particularly improving, and if we can defeat those two teams, we will likely find ourselves playing in the Super Bowl multiple times over the next few years.

I'm not talking about going undefeated, I'm talking about winning the Super Bowl.

signbabybrady obviously isn't the brightest crayon in the box. He read your thread title and thought you were talking about going undefeated. Then, as he usually does, he jumps on a reply ready to argue your ear off when, if he had read your opening post, he would have known that you were simply talking about winning the SB and NOT going undefeated.

Bury those old crows in the mud of south Florida and move on. They got FAR too much pub last year, lets just win the sb ANY other way so we dont have to listen to them.

Re: 2008 Pats need to match 1972 Dolphins....

Pats really have already done better than the '72 Dolphins. They have nothing to prove. The only "title" the Dolphins hold is "undefeated" in the season. But they were still only 17-0....and even that is not an official record.

The Pats have proven they can win the superbowl...again and again and again....and again if it weren't for a stopped clock and an ignored holding call. They've proven they can go 18-0....against a tougher schedule.

They don't need to do anything else to prove they're better than the ol' '72 farts.

Yeah those refs really had it in for the Pats. It's a conspiracy! Phantom holding and not stopping the clock. How about instead, we blame our loss on the complete inability of our O-Line to block the Giants' front four?

    Who didnt read the thread?

here is what he said I'll bold what I responded too.

    and my response.

all I was saying was that If we do go 19-0 this year than that would include winning a SB and thus is harder than just winning a SB with out going undefeated.

Re: 2008 Pats need to match 1972 Dolphins....

The 72 Dolphins were undefeated during the regular season and the playoffs, winning the Super Bowl in the end, making them the better team. The Patriots ended up 18-1 and two other teams have done that, the 49ers and the Bears, and both of those teams won the Super Bowl, so the Patriots rank 4th behind those three teams at best.

As others elsewhere have pointed out, they tailed off towards the end of the year and the Chargers gave them all they could handle. The outcome of the AFCCG may have been different if LT, Gates and Rivers were 100% healthy.

What the Dolphins did was more impressive; they also won the AFCCG on the road vs the Steelers that year too.

The Dolphins get the nod on this one.

Lay off the moonshine you flea brained halfwit, you're making zero sense with your babbling, moronic posts.

This coming from a fan of a team that lost to Billy Volek; effin priceless.

Please don't compare Eli to Volek; Eli was a #1 draft pick with loads of potential who finally put it all together in the playoffs this year. Volek was a BACK UP who came in cold off the bench to march down the field vs your overated defense and beat the Colts.

    Get a clue.

Not as much as those losses in Foxboro. At least the Pats didn't cry and get the rules changed.

People need to have realistic expectations. I will consider next season a success if the team wins the division. History shows that teams suffering SB defeats usually take major steps backwards due to the emotional toll of the loss. How much more so after so devastating a defeat, with the circus that surrounded the team and these players individually, not to mention the staff. I expect the team to say all the right things, and make a valiant effort, but for fans to expect more than a solid successful season by rational standards is asking too much.

That is where we have to match the 1972 Dolphins in that they lost the superbowl to Cowboys the previous year and came back stronger. This is the challege of Belichick's career.

Re: 2008 Pats need to match 1972 Dolphins....

yeah, real mentally tough. Thats why they lost to a team they should have beat by 14 points, there offense played their worst game of the season in the biggest game, and for the second year in a row the defense wet themselves and allowed a team to march 80 yards down the field in the last 2 minutes.
im not so sure they are what they were mentally 4 years ago,

Maybe if you rooted for a team that didn't let you down so much you'd be happier.
