I found the book I was telling you about. Here's the recipe for the 10 spice powder,

That's it. If you ever make it, please let me know what you what you think of it. Again, in case you're interested, the name of the book is China Moon, and the author was Barbara Tropp. She also wrote one called The Modern Art Of Chinese Cooking, which is much more about the basic dishes than the China Moon recipes.

Thanks!!! My wife is the cook...(I am like a total klutz in the kitchen...)and she does a really great of adventures in many cuisines...even though she can not eat large meals...That sounds very interesting!! Not sure what that would taste like but...very rich and different for sure!! Thanks again!!
China Moon is available on Amazon...and it's not at all for a novice but more detailed in more traditional Chinese food...with complex ingredients.

Very true. If this powder interests you but you need an easier book, her first one, The Modern Art Of Chinese Cooking would be the way to go.

Absolutely. But PJ is in China and I expect that it's tougher for him to go to the local Borders Book shop and find the cookbook in English, so I told him I'd find the recipe and get it to him to try.

    hey,

All good for me too. I make a pretty darned good sweet & sour chicken, and have been using the 5-spice blend. I'll have to go shopping this weekends and see if I can dig these up :)

Nice, thanks! I'll show this to my wife, she loves cooking.

We're going to a Chinese grocery store today, I'll look for the Szichuan peppercorns.

Star anise is so incredibly strong.

I've been working on a carrot cake at work, and one tiny star anise seed is enough to give a noticeable flavor to 2 full cakes, even with a bunch of other spices in it (cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger and 1 clove).

Just as a general heads up, there are now places that sell their spices online. I've always been able to find what I needed (except when they temporarily banned the peppercorns), so I haven't had to go this route. However, here are a couple of options, be it for this recipe or any other:

    Penzeys Spices Home Page

The Spice House - Merchants of Exquisite Spices, Herbs and Seasonings

There are plenty of others you can find, and price comparisons are easy. Good luck!

For anyone who tries this, I'd really appreciate if you'd let me know your opinion. I love it, but people have different tastes. So, if I tell people in the future, I want to be able to give them as full an honest an evaluation as possible.

    Mods,

Time to move this threat to the Pub. Or perhaps add another forum. Here are some suggestions:

    • Spices Around the NFL
    • Spice Nation
    • Gameday Cooking (w/Spices)
    • Spicey Meet Ups
    • Fantasy Spices
    • Everything Cheo Lemon
    • Everything Chet Lemon (Baseball Spice Forum)

Or put under any of the following threads.
    • Pepper Johnson is not playing, should we consider as a LB?
    • HalfThyme Thread
    • *PER CLAYTON * Re:Cracked (Shoulder) China Ginger
    • Our offense is too Vanilla. Bring back McDaniels and Weiss!
    • Our Sweet & Sour fans aren't loud enough!
