The deaths happened as French soldiers and Taliban militants fought a large battle near Kabul, according to the French Defense Ministry.

The French troops are part of the NATO-led force in Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF. There are 1,670 French troops in Afghanistan, according to a breakdown of troop numbers on ISAF's Web site.

Before this incident, 12 French troops have died in the Afghan war, mostly in combat.

I just saw this article before I got here. What a tragedy. The French, via Sarkosky, were planning on raising the total force size to 2,600. Who knows if that happens now. I wonder how the people in that country will react to this. In Italy, the bombing of the Italian Carabenieri station in Iraq really turned the public sour. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens in France with this news. I think most people would agree that the fight in Afghanistan is a justifiable one. At any rate, the French have been a true ally in this particular fight. Hope that doesn't change.

These are the things the scumbags in washington should be concerned with, has the Holy Messiah or Old Mccain ever mentioned these things.

    News Today:
A 4-year-old Roxbury boy shot in the back last night by a cold-blooded gunman is in stable condition this morning and authorities are optimistic he’ll pull through.

when i was in Afghanistan, we fought along side French special forces and they were the toughest SOBs around. They all were very cool and worked their ass off. I think the proplem is with the French government, not the troops.

Their Middle East site is a bit different but their English site is not that bad. They tend to report news that our media blocks out for whatever reasons exist at the time. I have always read foreign news sources ... as a check and balance. Can't always believe them but then again that applies to our own also.

Frances LeMond newspaper reported it ... al-jazeera got it from them. I can't read French so no use linking it but military.com is on to the story.
