There are normally 10 defensive back positions (8 LB and 7 DL's), although everyone can compete for the Player 53 position.
    --------------------------------------
At least two will be cut even if we don't draft anyone. We'll alos probably bring in injury insurance, perhaps Mickens. Please realize that whoever we draft need to replace someone and be ready to contribute now.

CB (4) Samuel, Hobbs, Scott, Gay

S (4) Harrison, Wilson, Sanders, Hawkins

DB/ST (2) Andrews, Spann, Baker, Mitchell

They might not need to cut two. You could always put Gay on IR...

Scott's spot could be replaced with a high-potential rookie. Scott has played very well when he has been in, and has he beloved versatility, but he is also old and injury-prone.

Spann is fairly easy to cut.
    Baker is gone.
Mitchell could also be replaced by a rookie if Hawkins is available for special teams. His recovery could determine his viability as a ST option.

    You might see:
    Samuel - Hobbs - rookie - Gay
    Harrison - Wilson - rookie - Sanders - Hawkins
    Andrews

I, too, prefer 10 DBs on the 53, at least 8 of whom can be trusted to play with the regular defense.

CB - Samuel, Hobbs, Gay; Scott's spot needs an upgrade, hopefully from a first-day pick.

S - Harrison, Wilson, Sanders; Hawkins' FS spot needs an upgrade, hopefully with a first-day pick.

    ST - Andrews, Mitchell

Too bad that the chances, of these 10 players opening the season on the 53, are so slim.

Because injuries always happen to the secondary, I would have 20 DBs in TC, at least 14 of whom worthy of belonging on a SB-quality roster.

    Re: 10 Defenssive Back Positions

Obviously it all depends on how the draft pays out, but I don't consider Spann or Baker to even be considerations to make the team, even if there were no draft coming up.

Alot can change over the next few weeks too.

    Re: 10 Defenssive Back Positions

Oh come on now that's a touch unrealistic. Most teams are lucky to have 14 total players worthy of belonging on a SB quality roster. You expect us to put out the AFC All Pro backfield there? :) Heck even the backups would have to be all pros according to this standard.

I would be happy with an upgrade at safety and a CB that we could develop for the future.

    Re: 10 Defenssive Back Positions

I'd like to take a safety very early. Probably, round 1. Then, add a cb in round 3 or 4. Don't think we can count on R.Gay to stay healthy.

    Starters; Samuel,Harrison,Wilson, Hobbs
    Backups; C.Scott,J.Sanders,#1(R.Nelson),#3
Contenders for last two spots; Hawkins,Mitchell,Gay,Spann,Andrews and Baker.

Not to nitpick here, but the Pats have carried as many as 12 lbs and not all at the expense of the DBs.

I would be surprised if the Pats only carried 8 LBs this year.

    Re: 10 Defenssive Back Positions

    My roster has
    7 DL's
    8 LB
    10 DB's

I wouldn't be surprised with 9 LB and 26 total defensive players.

What sucks extra is knowing that wichever DBs we cut are going to end up 4 hrs away in Hunter Green.

I agree that Spann, Mitchell, Andrews, etc. will have to be cut even without adding anybody. Why draft to stock other teams? I suggest we cut out the middle man, just trade on of our first rounders for a 7th rounder from either the Jets or Phish. That way when we draft a DB with it, he won't upgrade those teams.

I still see no need to draft using a first rounder to improve the quality of our secondary cuts, that will go to Hunter Green or Aqua & Teal via the waiver wire...

    Its about the same thing...

I could have sworn Miami picked him up when he was waived off the Practice Squad last year, so much for that brain cell. :(

Didn't he also have a cup of coffee with the Texans?

I'll never understand what the FO saw in him, or in Dexter Reid...or Cedric Cobbs...or PK Sam...or Christian Morton.

I was under the impression, coming from someone who watches all the games and usually one run on Tivo but not extensive tape or anything, that Hawkins is just awful. It was nicely documented by NFL network during the "state of the patriots" or whatever. However, I did like Harrison's replacement in Sanders. Is it safe to say that Hawkins has to go but Sanders has some good upside?

Also, I don't think that BB can count on Gay - if he stays healthy, it would be nice to but to plan around having him as a backup is unrealistic.
