Your post is right on the money. What's happening in Foxboro right now is exhilarating. BB has recognized that the talent pool for 34 base defenses is now stretched too thin and thus is too expensive. He has been able to sign this slew of potential defensive help because none of all the 34 teams...
I didn't mean to suggest that veteran FA's can walk into Foxboro and dictate schemes to our head coach. There appears to be growing evidence that the favored base 34 that BB has USUALLY run over the years may be changing due to the difficulty in finding and paying 34 personnel. BB has won rings...
Agreed, Carter had a very nice year with 11.5 sacks as a 4-3 rush DE just 2 years ago. Kind of surprised he was still available. Matt Patricia's head must be spinning!
Because there were no OTA's, camps or playbooks until 2 weeks ago. The whole evaluation process, unfortunately, has been accelerated dramaticaly. Young players are going to get less time to impress this year.
The problem is he doesn't want to play the OLB. He was vocal about it in Washington. I don't know if he was assured he wouldn't have to play it here, but I doubt he would have signed here otherwise.
I know Cunningham battled injuries last year that certainly slowed his development at OLB, but I think the coaching staff was looking for more. As a 4-3 end at Florida, the switch back to a down lineman here seemed like a natural. But according to Bedard, Reiss and Curran, he hasn't looked good...
You're probably right, but most of their young depth are D tackle types. Outside of Haynesworth, they haven't brought in any other veteran inside help. BB has signed three veteran DE's in the last two days. That can't be good for Cunningham.
Chad Jackson and Bethel Johnson come to mind. They did not last long. I don't think BB is in the mood to wait around this year. In his mind, I think he feels he has to win now, maybe at the expense of a couple of developmental guys. That's what it feels like to me right now.
Could be, but I don't think so. BB signed Haynesworth to play on the inside with Vince. He's loading up on DE's to find the best outside guys. Don't look now, but I think this does not bode well for Cunningham. He's not having a good camp and I wouldn't be shocked to see him gunned.
