This was a lot of fun.
The picks went like this:
1. Geno Smith QB
1. Jonathan Cooper OG
1. Desmond Trufant CB
2. DeAndre Hopkins WR
2. Terron Armstead OT
2. Margus Hunt DE
3. Darius Slay CB
3. Brian Schwenke C
3. Bacarri Rambo FS
4. Stedman Bailey WR
4. Devin Taylor DE
4...
Should be obvious but it needs to be said, the 10 yard split and, later on, the jumps are far more predictive of pass rushing success than a simple 40 time.
Yep. Lester was pretty awful this past season. Rambo did not shine in that bowl game, and overall, wasn't as good as expected. McDonald was a nightmare all season in coverage.
As for Cyprien, I only saw highlights, which show a guy who is pretty good close to the line but not all that...
I don't think he's going to outsprint all that many defenders. Still, he's got major quickness and he's fast enough to get by - certainly faster than Dieon was coming into the league. The big thing that I see similar to Branch is the way he catches the ball in tight coverage. Bailey keeps...
I'm not sure I'm on board with the Lloyd comparison but Hopkins is definitely my #1 WR. Strong, fast, physical (LSU was trying to beat the hell out of him all game and it just made him bear down more) and can snatch. Hopkins runs all the routes and makes plays after the catch. He's an...
Just for giggles, one of the models I ran last season was one that looks at the effectiveness for defensive linemen, as divined by a combination of size and Combine numbers. I went into it thinking there were a bunch of guys who would be excellent NFL DLs. The numbers showed the class to be...
CBS rankings, no trades.
27. Kendall Reyes, DL, UConn
If nothing else, his sack celebrations remind me of Richard's, so he's got that going for him.
31. Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame
Most versatile safety in the class and probably the best. Might not be saying much at the end of...
Athletically, the two kids from NC State, Kuhn and Sweezy, are better than either Brockers or Hicks, at least from a standpoint of putting them outside on the 5. No idea if either of them will amount to much but I'm unsure Brockers or Hicks will either.
Really wish Bilukidi had been invited...
No rhyme or reason for the order here:
1. Bruce Irvin, DE/LB, WVU - After weighing the plusses and minuses of all the guys in this draft, Irvin looks to be a lock to be the most effective pass rusher in this class.
2. Josh Robinson, CB, Central Florida - Risky, but this guy put up...
I'll go with an all combine hero cast:
Kendall Reyes
Audie Cole
Jake Bequette
Josh Robinson
Stephon Gilmore
Harrison Smith
Jarius Wright
Jeron McMillian
CBS:
#27 Whitney Mercilus DE/OLB, Illinois - Not sure you can classify juniors as one year wonders. Regardless, Mercilus would bring the edge strength versus the run and a hell of a burst off the edge against the pass.
#31 Dont'a Hightower ILB/OLB, Bama - Swiss Army knife of a huge...
They had Buchanan standing up quite a bit, yeah. Still, I'm not sure which games you saw but I'm nearly positive Mercilus was standing up multiple times during the one I watched. Might have been the UCLA game but I can't be sure.
And to answer one of Manxman's questions, he can definitely...
I only watched one Illinois game last season and I could have sworn they had Mercilus standing up several times that game. Yet, all across the interwebs, I keep hearing how he's 4-3 DE only.
I have no idea where this myth came from. The guy I watched was strong, quick and positionally...
Bacarri Rambo is dipping his toes by asking the committee for a draft grade, so there's some hope amidst a sea of mediocrity. Not sure how others (Ochmed, in particular) feel about Rambo after seeing more of him but after watching him in two games, I like the kid.
17 - Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College
Nate Solder has the helium but Castonzo fits the scheme. Has great size and very long arms. Seems like he'd be a tremendous fit in our zone blocking run game.
28 - Justin Houston, OLB/DE, UGA
Initially picked Heyward here before seeing a lot...
