If we were a contender needing someone to put us over the top then I would advocate for it. But we aren't and we can't afford to give up what would be required at this point. In addition, we'd have to give Aiyuk a huge contract - likely $25m-$30m a year. I'm not doing that plus the picks.
Free agency is looking bare. I think signing Tyron Smith and hoping he can have a Jason Peters type long career is the best option at this point. Frankly, I think we might be done aside from signing back the likes of Myles Bryant and maybe a veteran middling WR.
I appreciate the half glass full approach, but a counter point would be:
1. People over-estimate how bad the 2021 free agency was. The hit rate was fine - probably above average actually. Judon has been a stud with a value contract. Henry has been good. Godshaux has been good and got a new...
This free agency has been pretty good for Bill Belichick.
1. Poor drafter? The new team focused on re-signing his key draft pieces - Dugger, Onwenu, Jennings, Uche. The best young players on the team are recent draft picks - Barmore, Gonzalez, Stevenson. The issue is probably that the fails...
I'm awaiting the report that they were interested in Williams and had a competitive offer on the table but it didn't work out. We couldn't stretch to beating $30m over two years?
The point is that it isn't year one of a rebuild. The team has stunk for 3 years. We were all told there was going to be an aggressive mindset. There hasn't been. Apparently they made Ridley their number 1 - and seemingly only - target, and yet wouldn't actually part with the money to get him...
Wolf wanted to weaponise the offense. When he said that he didn't mean in year three. He meant, or at least he should have known it would be interpreted as, this off season. That we'd make some aggressive moves to finally get some weapons after years of substandard performances. It hasn't...
The only way to find long term success is by drafting well. But you also need to fill some needs in free agency so you aren't left drafting desperately for need come April. That's where we are. Rookies need time and ideally some good veteran help to bring them along. The reality is this team is...
Exactly. At this point in time we don't have a WR1 or 2. Most teams have two quality receivers, we have a bunch of complimentary pieces. Along with no difference maker at TE and no QB. We are the Carolina Panthers at this point. Bringing in a top rookie QB with little hope of success year 1...
So much for weaponising the offense and burning some cash. If we trade for Aiyuk or Higgins we are giving up an even bigger contract than the one Ridley got plus giving up a high pick. I'd rather have Ridley +34 than Aiyuk or Higgins by a mile.
It's the same old story sadly. Interest, being in...
Can I just say our front office is being so naive here. You've got an offer on the table but Ridley hasn't responded. Why do you think that is? He's waiting to sign with Jax later today. You either up your offer and give a deadline or just move on.
If it comes out that Ridley has signed for...
I would trade a 7th for Williams on the condition takes a pay cut or incentive laden deal. $20m is too much this year given his injury and age. He won't make that on the open market. I think we'd have a decent shot at him on the open market anyway at a far lower price.
This is the day we really need to start improving the team. I would like to end the day with a starting tackle and a new WR at the least. Ideally we could find a solid number 2 corner and a solid starting DT too. That would allow us more flexibility going into the draft.
In all likelihood...
