Seriously, though, NASCAR guys are caught cheating all the time. It is an accepted part of the game. Kind of like miking defensive players to catch audible calls or stealing catcher signs.

Racing teams are caught cheating all the time in NASCAR. They are usually docked points in the standings. This sounds a bit more severe.

Because as much as it's fed down our throats, the fans of NASCAR don't really care about the races. They care about drinking beer, having mullets, and seeing people crash.

If it was Jeff Gordon then you'd probably hear a lot of backlash from fans.

Probably true, because his name is known outside of the sport. Same with someone like Michael Phelps. No one really gives a crap about swimming, but everyone knows Michael Phelps because of how dominant he's been. If we found out he was doping, it'd be a huge story.

That's probably the point you were making, huh? That it was a big deal with the Pats because of how successful they are?

It is in the Washington Post, it is getting coverage, WP is not some obscure paper only read by a niche of auto racing fans.

And speaking of which, who cares about auto racing anyway? Drive fast, turn left.

True, but the thing that Gordon, Barry Bonds and the Pats have in common is that they have a LOT of haters too. If someone reported that Phelps was doping then people would just downplay it because EVERYONE loves Phelps. When Mark McGwire was pretty much exposed, nobody really made a fuss because he had a lot of people on his side during the HR chase.

NASCAR had almost $3 billion in profits last year - I would say a lot of people care. I'm not a hardcore fan by any means but a NASCAR race is one of the best events you can ever attend.
