Pretty striking to see murders in Chicago, with a third the population, surpassing those in New York City.

The crime rate statistics for NYC are suspect at best, the police force has a history of manipulating them for political purposes.

No, NYC is legitimately in better shape than it was 20+ years ago. There are several factors involved in that.

Maybe NYC is in better shape and maybe NYC's homicide rate is at the lowest levels ever.

It doesn't change the fact that crime statistics are being manipulated for political reasons and should be treated as suspect.
