My 8 year old grandaughter says she wants an ipod touch for xmas, not sure if we should do that or go with the Kindle Fire..

Seems like more applications for her and her educational needs..

I have one of the early ipod touches 8 gigs, piece of junk it you want to use wifi. Can't believe they charged people $220 for this POS. I got mine for free when i bought an imac. They are tough though, ive thrown mine against the wall at least three times and it still works, well sort of, like it did before i threw it.

Do you mean iPad? An iPod Touch is the same size as a phone, while a Fire is a small tablet. My experience with the Fire is that it tends to hang...especially the browser. It is much, much cheaper than the iPad though.

I have a first generation touch and I can't tell you enough how much I use it - it really works well and I think it's like 3-4 years old now. Aside for the fact I can't update the IOS because it's only Generation two or better that seems to work with the newer operating systems, so I'm down to like 5-6 apps that work and can't update them anymore. But I'm stubborn and refuse to buy a new one until this one breaks ;)

But it's great for email, looking up something the web, etc. (provided you have WiFi where you're using it) and it fits in your pocket. Again, don't buy it expecting to spend hours surfing the net - it's too small for that and there are better options. But it's convenient for keeping up with e-mail, checking the weather, my bank has an app so banking is easy, taking notes, the new ones have a camera and also shoot HD video, etc, and obviously the fact it's great for keeping your music. It's pretty cool and you can buy refurbished ones for starting at around $169 on Apple.com.

What about an iPad mini? $329. About the size of a Kindle, but it's an iPad!

Get her an iPod touch. She will enjoy it significantly more. I teach children and as far as educational content available, specifically free content, the iPod touch has is far better.
