Which NFL team has allowed the fewest points over the last 5 years?
The Ravens, you reflexively say? Not according to the stats from USA Today. Our own Patriots have allowed an average of 17.1 points/game over the last five seasons - lowest average (and total) in the NFL. Another tidbit - last year's 288yds/game allowed by the D was lowest for a Pats team in 30yrs. Who says we're in the age of offense? :D

thanks for sharing? link please?
would expect Pats to be there, because of their consistency. Ravens maybe, but they have not been consistent each of the past 5 years..... |

Sure would be nice to throw in a few more Lombardi's. |

Excellent, this backs up my point that the defense was damn good last year and they played their best football in the playoffs when it mattered.

Re: Which NFL Team Has Allowed The Fewest Points Over The Last 5 Years?
I love having a great defense, but it's also nice to have a great offense to help the defense by sustaining drives and winning the time of possession battle. There aren't many ways in which last year's offense can be improved upon, but a more healthy, more consistent running game will help (which is why I'm so into the idea of keeping 5 backs). I certainly don't want to do away with the quick-strike offense, but I bet there were times last year where the defense was like "What? They just scored again? We just sat down!"

Re: Which NFL Team Has Allowed The Fewest Points Over The Last 5 Years?
Actually, I am not surprised it is the Patriots. The Pats have been fairly consistent on defense the entire Belichick era. It hasn't been otherworldly like it was in 2003 every year, but solid.
I do think it is ironic that the only year in the last five years the Pats weren't near the top in points allowed was the year Mangini was running the defense. It wasn't all his fault since Bruschi missed the first 6 games and was recovering from his stroke and Monty Beisel was ummm...... Monty Beisel. But Mangini's passive pass rush definitely played into it. |

yeah i remember how great they played on D in 03 and 04 but i would have said the steelers or the eagles would be first

What does USA Today know ...
The God of all sports ESPN just had an article last week entitled "Is Bill Belichick losing his mojo?" stating that the defensive genius is no longer because his teams can't defend. Who are we to believe???? |
