This report isn't really relevant when there are no numbers included. Could be a bunch of B.S

The Saints are crazy to offer him a big deal, Brees is obviously too short, too slow, he's a system QB who is only good because of the players around him, and he limits their offense. They should offer him 1-2 years 3 million a year with 2 guaranteed and then sign VJax, he's tall and fast.

I completely agree that if anyone were ever worthy of the term "system QB", it's Brees. The splits between his dome play and outdoor play are ridiculous, even though most of his outdoor games are still in warm weather. New Orleans has one of the best offenses I've ever seen. There is truly no quarterback in the NFL that couldn't succeed there. Brees' game is throwing jump balls to athletic receivers and dumping off to Sproles. I mean, everyone made a big deal about Gronkowski last year, but Graham was just about as good as a receiver, but Brees also has about eight other guys that can win matchups.

I've always thought Brees was highly overrated. I can't believe he is being such a selfish chump in his negotiations.

I think that the top 2 QBs in the league are Brady and Rodgers. I've always had a problem with "the big three." #3 is reserved for Peyton Manning, or maybe even Eli Manning.

I think the idea is without seeing breakdown, we don't know what he was offered.

$23 million per?

Easy:

$10 million signing bonus +

Year 1: $13 million salary
Year 2: $15 m
Year 3: $19 m
Year 4: $21 m
Year 5: $32 m + $5 million signing bonus at camp

$115 million package over 5 years = $23 million
$78 million package over first 4 years = $19.5 million

I'm no cap expert, but I don't believe that this is possible under the current rules:

A few of you are understating how good Brees is. Granted he is helped a lot by the dome and having Sean Payton call the plays he is still ridiculously accurate, I'd say more so than Brady on deep balls. His completion percentage is helped by the number of dump offs he throws, and he throws a ton of them, but Christ if Brady dumped it off to Green Ellis instead of taking a safety in the Superbowl we probably win.

23 million a year though? Nah, wouldn't pay him that. Brees is rightfully coming in high because he knows Loomis would never let him walk, the backlash from the fan base would be so strong he might as well put his house on the market.

I believe the 33% rule for salary increases only applied to the uncapped year, but in case it was totally incorporated in the CBA, this is how you figure it out:

33% of the signing bonus plus the pro-rated amount of the salary cap increase also works into the formula (it used to in the old CBA).

So, let's say the cap goes from $120m to $150m in 5 years (which I believe is roughly accurate).

If that's the case, then total comp in my example could not be 33% higher than $21m salary + $3.3m signing bonus amount + $6m = 25% cap proration (25% x 23m salary + bonus in prior year): $30.3m total.

So, I'm $6.7m off, or $1.3m a year.

Instead of averaging $23m a year, the initial (bogus) offer would average $21.7m a year, still a bit more than $19.5m.

I heard during the '11 season that he was offered a contract similar to Brady and Vick's. If he offered more money than the top 2, he would've took that money.

If the Saints don't pay, I'm sure the Skins will.
