Ravens Torry Smith Was Looked At Closely By Pats

reposting this after I accidentally put it in the Draft forum-

Found this tidbit in an article on the Ravens offense from yesterday-

Smith also talked about last spring's draft process, one that saw the Patriots very interested in the former Maryland product.

"I pretty much did everything you could do with New England as far as the draft process goes," he said. "I met with them at the combine, did a private workout, and I saw them around a lot. They have a great coaching staff, and you can see with the way their track record has been they know how to win."

Well, we passed on him 3 times, twice in the second round when we took Dowling, then Vereen (just two spots ahead of Smith). Smith had good regular season numbers for a rookie with Flacco as his QB. Imagine what he could have done with Brady chucking him the ball.

50 catches, 841 yds, 16.8yd average, 7 TDs, 74yds longest TD.

Yes, the jury is still out on Vereen and Dowling but they've been non-factors all year while Smith is emerging as a star. I must admit going into Sunday's game it sure would look good to have Smith as our 3rd (2nd?) WR instead of Ocho...

The one position we can't evaluate very well in the draft...WR. If B.LLoyd signs with us though, it's all good:cool:

While hindsight is always 20/20, I would hold off on calling Smith an emerging star. Other than Boldin, there really is no other wr on that team. Smith runs a lot of go routes, who knows how he would've been able to fit in the Pats complicated offense. It seems as though the Pats receiving core is asked way more of them in order to execute on the field than the Raven wr's are asked of them and the reason for thst is #12.

Not quite sure STAR is the appropriate assessment just yet.
50 catches and 840 yards is pretty mediocre for a starting WR.
Of course almost half of the yards (317) came in 2 games, so was that a preview of a future star of was the guy who averaged less than 40 a game the rest of the season the real player? Only time will tell.
It should be noted in his last 7 games his numbers are 22-260-11.8-2, which isnt very impressive.

For a rookie his numbers are good. He also plays with a fellow called Joe Flacco. Boldin used to be a stud in Arizona as a #2 and his numbers have gone way down in that Ravens offense.

Aside from 2 games his numbers actually aren't even good for a rookie.

I was higher on Titus Young. I still am.

Time will tell, naturally.

I believe the book on Smith in college was that he was a burner but not a route runner. Not sure how he'd do in the Pats offense. With his speed he may have made a very nice complimentary part of the WR corps on the outside drawing safety help while Gronk, Hernandez and Welker gash the middle.

LOL WHAT?! Your expectations of rookies are ridiculous. You're a repeat offender of this, too.

PS: Torrey Smith didn't start the entire year. His first start was against the Rams where he caught 3 TDs.

PPS: Deion Branch, technically our #1, had very similar numbers to Torrey Smith. 10 year vet = rookie? Not bad, Torrey.
