For you Gostkowski haters
Here is some food for thought.
Through 15 weeks (and 95 kickoffs) Gostkowski is averaging 65 YPK. And, if you look, the only reason that Gost's YPK is so low is the one game against Pittsburgh where he averaged only 42.8 YPK on 5 kicks.. Gost's avg is 66.2 without those 4 from Pitt. The Average return allowed by the Pats is 21.6 YPR. BTW, the YPR is good for 6th best in the league. Gostkowski has 34 touchbacks on the year. Prior to his injury, Gostkowski was averaging just shy of 68 (67.9) YPK. he'd made 42 kick-offs in 8 games with an average of 24.5 YPR. And, if you want to talk about Field Goals, Gost was 10-13 through 8 games last year. People complaining about Gost being 26-31 (the 2nd most FG attempts he's made in his career) need to relax. 3 of the misses have been from 40+ yards. I'm all for legitimate complaints, but complaining about a guy who is coming off a serious leg injury that directly affects his job performance is one of the things that people need to re-evaluate. |
Re: For you Gostkowski haters
Why would anybody hate Gostkowski? Oh yeah, I forgot -- if he doesn't make every kick the fans with "high expectations" will boo him.

Re: For you Gostkowski haters
At first I read "Gronkowski" and was like what hater??!
I like Gostkowski. He's having a decent year. There's plenty other areas for us fans to be concerned with. His 34 TBs are 13th in the league however, his TB percentage is only 36.2%, ranking him 26th in the league. Maybe it's more strategic due to the new kickoff rule... I would much rather have an opposing team start behind the 20 than at it. I imagine on a decent amount of these kick offs he's putting it at a reasonable return spot so our STs can get down there and make a play behind the 20. |

a few stats from patriots.com
Gostkowski has hit 113-of-134 career field goal attempts, and his 84.3 percent accuracy rate is the highest in Patriots history and sixth-best in NFL history. He scored over 100 points in each of his first four NFL seasons (103 in 2006, 137 in 2007, 148 in 2008 and 125 in 2009). In 2008, Gostkowski was named to his first career Pro Bowl and also earned a spot on the Associated Press All-Pro First Team. Gostkowski set a Patriots single-season record and led the NFL with 36 successful field goals in 2008. In 2008, Gostkowski led the NFL with 148 points, the most by a Patriots player since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger and the second highest total in team history (Gino Cappelletti, 155 in 1964). Gostkowski connected on 90 percent of his field goal tries in 2008 (36-for-40), tying the second highest single-season field goal percentage in team history. Gostkowski set an NFL single-season record with 74 successful PAT kicks in 2007. Gostkowski was perfect in the 2006 playoffs, connecting on all eight of his field goals, including a game-winning, 31-yard boot with 1:10 remaining to seal the Patriots' divisional playoff victory at San Diego (1/14/07). Gostkowski kicked the longest field goal in Patriots playoff history when he nailed a 50-yard boot at San Diego (1/14/07). Gostkowski's 52-yard field goal vs. Chicago (11/26/06) was the longest field goal in Gillette Stadium history. |

When you don't hear about the kicker, punter, LS and holder in the news, they're doing their job.

Sports Illustrated's page says: FG Made: 26 (10th) FG Pct: 83.9 (17th) Long: 50 (28th) XP Made: 54 (3rd) To me, Gostkowski is an average kicker, and his middle-of-the-road field goal percentage supports that. I don't get a surge of confidence when he strides onto the field, nor do I get an anxiety attack. I hope that doesn't make me a "hater" in your book. There are times when his play p*sses me off, but that's true for everyone on the team (ok, well, Wilfork never pisses me off! :-) ). |
