Defensive headset rules in preseason

As I understand it only one defensive player may wear the radio during the regular season. I was wondering if they would allow multiple players to use it during the preseason since starters only play a few series. I am interested in which of our second team players gets the responsibility in preseason.

I believe only one player may be on the field at a time with the radio, but I think more than one player is allowed to have it over the course of a game.

The rule for the regular season is that only two defensive players will be miked and only one can be on the field at a given time. I am sure they will revise that rule a bit for the preseason.

Technically, only two active players on offense are allowed to have the mike since the third QB in the game is inactive unless needed. It may actually be written that only two active players on offense can have the mike. They allow that to be expanded in the preseason too.

Seems rather restrictive given all the rotations/sub packages involved.

I think it is only one on teh field of course....Seems like a LOT of fine tuning on thos one..on offense, it is obvious..QB..but defense so different..I think there still may be signals etc..depending on the rotation..Won't solve all the problems...but no more talk of video...lol

That's why Belichick and about eight other teams were against it. The Patriots only voted for it because of the whole Spygate thing and if they voted against it, it would have been a huge story.

Of course this would not preclude having zero miked players on the field. So if you have one guy that is in for 95% of the plays but no one specific player that goes in when he comes out, it might make sense just to hand signal those plays in.

I'm not sure I like the fact that only one miked player can be in at the same time. If you decide half way through that you want them both in at the same time your screwed. Can one switch helmets or something? Regardless, who cares if two players on the field at the same time are getting the exact same plays?

The only thing I'm wondering when it comes to headsets is what excuses fans from other teams are going to use now when we whoop up on them. Can't go the "defensive signal" route anymore.

My guess would be that the two players on defense who are equipped with the radios would have two helmets for the game. One with and one without the radio. Just seems like common sense to me (unless of course there is some ridiculous NFL rule against it).
