Schefter: Groves will be biggest bust in the draft

He implies he knows something he can't reveal. Without saying it, he seems to imply something off-field related.

His current mock, based on scuttlebut he's hearing...

1. J.Long
2. Dorsey
3. Ryan
4. Gholston
5. C Long
6. McFadden
7. Rivers/Albert

Well, if he knows something then we can be sure that every team in the NFL knows about it so I'm not too worried

Well, that's a pretty bold statement. It's also entirely possible that it's being blown out of proportion simply due to the fact that it is new information.

But what off field issues could make him a bust on field? Pending criminal charges, drug or alcohol addiction problem, or steroids/HGH. I can't think of anything else that would really limit him except his sexuality. And that's totally reaching.

Also, from Stewart Mandel:

Quote:

Underrated: Quentin Groves, Auburn

Groves was limited by injuries at times last season, but when he was at his best, he was definitely one of those guys who can take over a game just by the pressure he puts on opposing quarterbacks. He did just that in the Tigers' early season upset at Florida, helping limit Heisman winner Tim Tebow to mostly short completions. The year before, when fully healthy, he notched 9.5 sacks. The only defensive end I'd rank above him is Chris Long, and if, as projected, Groves slips into the second round, someone is going to get themselves an absolute steal.

It doesn't touch on off field problems, but it emphasizes how vague speculation and vague accusations don't really mean much until the facts are actually known.

And I guess the Dophins arent' aware of this:

According to Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins are targeting four players: Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey, Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves, Michigan quarterback Chad Henne and Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco.

Lots of conflicting information going around.

Re: Schefter: Groves will be biggest bust in the draft

People need to understand that Schefter has never been a talent evaluator, or a football expert. He's simply a reporter, who gets contract info early because he works for the league. Honestly, I can't understand why the NFL Network even started using him in a larger role, because it's obvious he really doesn't know football all that well.

Getting to what you seem to think Schefter might be hinting to (off the field issues). In another post, I've linked to a Q&A with groves where he talks about his "character issues", and claims the only problems he's ever had were an argument with his wife (not an assault, but an argument that got loud), he stole something when he was ten years old, and got into an accident without proper insurance. During his interview he said that he wanted to be open with NFL teams, and told them everything.

You think he has a questionable work ethic? Honestly, I have to second guess anyone who truly believes this. The guy was a team captain at Auburn, graduated early, came back for his senior year when he could have gone pro, and played through injuries that were especially painful for him in 2007. Heck, he was even happy to switch over to some 34 packages and play LB his senior year, saying he thanked the coaches for putting the packages in. That doesn't sound like a player with a particularly pore work ethic, or commitment to the team.

I have no idea where he'll actually go in the draft, because I don't know if some teams are worried about his surgery, and how that will effect his stock, but on the field (and during draft season workouts) Groves was among the best.

owww

if u listen to it....he seems positive about EVERY pick Except NE's...which is funny

and i think it reflects the Pats's stranglehold of themselves

OK, so Schefter heard something negative from someone, and we have no clue what. Meanwhile we already know that there are some red flags floating around Groves, and it could have been something that's already known here. Or not.

Thanks, Adam! That's really helpful and informative! I'm totally ready to change all my predictions now!

Re: Schefter: Groves will be biggest bust in the draft

OK, after listening to the whole interview...

The D&C nitwits are trying to sound all knowledgeable about the Pats' draft. Then when Schefter names Quentin Groves as his "biggest bust" projection they all start shuffling papers trying to find his name, because they've never heard of the guy. Then Schefter assures them Groves is only expected to be a "late round pick" anyway.

So: the only time D&C&Meterperel have ever heard of Quentin Groves is as a late-round pick guaranteed to be the bust of the draft. Wouldn't it be hysterical if he ended up as the Pats' #1 pick? For some reason that image totally amuses me.

My take is there's something there, and it isn't the issues with his wife. Schefter usually knows what he's talking about- not because he is a talent evaluator, but because people who are tell him the scoop.

Or find that giving him disinformation prior to the draft about a player is a wise move.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if someone from the Niners was the source behind the presumed "something of substance."

"He's only a pawn in their game."
