End of a lengthy Era-Shuttle program shuts down

The cost/benefit worthiness of the space program has been debated ever since it started. How do we feel on this board? I'm saddened by it. Curiosity drives learning.

End of an era for shuttle, and NASA - CBS News

End of an era for shuttle, and NASA

NASA does all kinds of stuff. They build space robots. They send up satellites. They study the oceans.

But come on - who're we kidding? When most people think of NASA, they think of manned space flight. The space shuttle.

But after 30 years, and 135 flights, NASA has decided to close down the space shuttle program.

The Shuttle is an amazing machine. It takes off like a rocket, but lands like a plane, so it's re-usable. It's had some spectacular successes. It carried the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit, letting us see millions of times farther into space than we ever could before.

Sorry! I just noticed the other thread. I should always have my coffee before posting ;-X

As I understand this, it is moving to the private sector.. maybe appropriately.

NASA is now pursuing other venues, with bigger rockets to reach other places..

Drudge, of course, is insinuating that Obama for ended this segment of history, while in reality it has gone on for a while.. but some will just follow along.

40 year old tech, its almost certainly time to retire it. Its also almost certainly time to roll out something better; but that costs money and there's no instant gratification and this generation is simply too obsessed with driving taxes down to zero. Hopefully when all the grade school kids of today grow up their priorities will be different and we can go back to expanding our understanding of what's out there.

Manned space missions aren't the only yardstick, though.

Oh I know....

as we speak to each other via the internet, connected by satellites and wireless tech. We can't even count the tech advancements we now use because of of the space era.

Its just strange thats all....as a kid growing up during the shuttle era, I would've thought we'd be a lot further along by 2011 thats all. Its kinda depressing.

But then I look at advancements like the Snuggie, or the fact that I have 84 different ways to shop from home, or the fried twinkie and I'm satisfied with the direction of mankind.
