I Take It Back About Mass. Being a Safe Place...

I used to wonder why people would want to live in LA, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas...all the places where Nature can KILL you at any moment. I used to take comfort in the calm weather, no geological hazards and, most striking...NO KILLER TORNADOES since 1953.

Well...I can't say that no more.

The weather everywhere is wierd this year. I hope this isn't the beginning of a trend here. I might have to move to Texas................NOT!

Oh well. At least we still have great sports, schools and beaches.

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The devastating tornadoes that have been happening in the South are reminding people here in western Massachusetts about a deadly tornado of our own.

This Sunday marks the 16th anniversary of the Great Barrington tornado which took three lives and you don't have to look for long to find someone in Great Barrington who has vivid memories of that Memorial Day tornado in 1995.

Great Barrington? That's so far out it might as well be Oklahoma.

So far out? It's pretty close to the Springfield where a tornado touched down today. I actually live about an hour north of that. It takes me 2 1/2hours to get to Gillette(if i don't get caught up in game day traffic by leaving too late that is) on game day for perspective.

nah, Great Barrington is a good ways past Springfield.

great Barrington is exit 2 off the pike, iirc -- same as Lee, and lenox, but south. You can't get a lot further west in Mass.

Is there a Lesser Barrington? Or is it Great Barrington, as in Great Britain, where there were a lot of smaller Barringtons united under some Arthurian village father? I'm sorry but I just can't get past Great Barrington here. Someone help me out.

Its named after a reef off the coast of Australia. :)

There is a lesser Barrington but its in England. They have both. Imagine the complex those growing up in Lesser Barrington must have?

I guess it's relative. It's about 50 miles.
