"Garbage Time" whining is getting ludicrous

I won't link to it as it deserves no more hits, but I'm finding the bellyaching over "Garbage Time" stats to be hilarious, particularly in light of some regular season games over the past two years.

What exactly is Garbage Time against a quality opponent capable of staging a comeback?

Last year the Colts came back on the Pats, and almost did it again this year. The Eagles just made the Giants look like total fools on Sunday. If you are a fan of a team, why would you want them to take their foot off an opponent's throat (sorry if I indirectly conjured some Rex Ryan imagery... ugh) until the final whistle is blown?

Every snap matters until the seeding is set, and then every snap matters again in January or February. The only place I'd deviate from the Belichick philosophy is not wanting to risk injuries to players in a game where there is no benefit to winning. After what happened to Welker last year, it just isn't worth the diminished performance in the playoffs.

I for one am glad that the team I like keeps going for jugular. Would a team without the instinct to always strike be able to muster 24 points against a top defense with only 19 minutes on the field? People complaining about this stuff are upset that their QB isn't capable of doing the same.

Go check out the fan board for the New York Giants.

They have threads dedicated to the third quarter "we play 60 mins" speech given by BB in the Jets blowout and why that make BB a better coach than Caughlin.

I agree with you 100% and feel certain that I will disagree with you 100% if/when the Pats are once again the sort of team that struggles in every game. I am serious. Right now I totally feel this is correct, deep in my bones. One day I think it is likely that I will feel deep in my bones that there is no need for this sort of thing. That's what makes us fans.

But for now, hell yeah.

But that's EXACTLY WHAT THE GIANTS DID. They tried to keep their foot on teh Eagles neck. They kept blitzing. They didn't sit back and play coverage. And what happened? Brent Celek running free down the middle against cover 0.

That's the reason why we play more coverage with a lead. Make them drive the ball and not give it up in 1 play like the Giants did.

I think the OP was talking about the Giants offense going conservative.

IMO, the worst part of the Giants/Eagles game was Coughlin's coaching - and I haven't heard a word about it (except not being prepared for the onside kick) until WelshPat's post.

The Giants invited the Eagles to make big plays against them - and the Eagles obliged. I'm not much of a believer in prevent defenses and that's not what I was looking for. However, I do think that it is foolishness to continually play inherently risky defense (many blitzes with corresponding man-to-man coverage against a QB who can both throw the deep ball and run extremely well in the open field) with a big lead and not much time left.

Yes, the players need to execute - and they did (albeit the ones wearing the green jerseys ;) ). What was Coughlin thinking? :bricks: :bricks:

So much has been made about a mental mistake by the punter and a collapse by the Giants special team coverage on the final play of the game. Sure, that was important. But one of the main reasons that they were in this position was because of the defensive calls.

Who knows, maybe the defensive coordinator is more to blame. But instead of falsely taking the blame for the punter's lapse in judgment, Coughlin should instead by taking the blame for the ridiculous defensive alignments that were put out on the field (as well as *3* different times that Giant runners with the ball needlessly ran out of bounds in the last 8 minutes; what kind of coaching leads to that mistake over and over?)
