The Wars That America Forgot About

IN what promises to be the most contentious midterm election since 1994, there is no shortage of passion about big issues facing the country: the place and nature of the federal government in America’s future; public debt; jobs; health care; the influence of special interests; and the role of populist movements like the Tea Party.

In nearly every Congressional and Senate race, these are the issues that explode into attack ads, score points in debates and light up cable talk shows. In poll after poll, these are the issues that voters say are most important to them this year.

Notice anything missing on the campaign landscape?

How about war? The United States is now in its ninth year of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, the longest wars in American history. Almost 5,000 men and women have been killed. More than 30,000 have been wounded, some so gravely they’re returning home to become, effectively, wards of their families and communities.

As time marches on we, as a nation, completely become desensitized to the impact on our economy, our warriors and collective society...

Give peace a chance...

Maybe the electorate realizes that these wars have a purpose?

The cynic in me says that Harry is right. Some people are used to it, some people are what Brokaw says, not directly or barely involved, some people think we're headed in the right direction but I think the majority of people just used it as a disingenuous political weapon to hammer at the right with.

Edit: I'm not saying genuine criticism for the wars weren't warranted, I'm just saying they're suspect because they disappeared once Bush did. These wars should be a factor in this election

Slightly off target by the NYT depends on opinion I guess ... the Iraq war officially started during the Clinton years. I was kind of surprised when i learned that some time ago. it started with the Gulf War 1990-1991. Then 1991 - 2003 was the no-fly zone war. Then 2003 the Iraq war.

The reason I say this is because that's a ton of money ... 1990 to present war in that region which makes it 20+ years of war.

The History Guy: The No-Fly Zone War (1991-2003)

some good links here ... the guy does a decent job.
You read this page and you realize how fugged up our world is ...
if there's a creator they are sadistic through and through.

The wars are now "Obama Wars" and good God almighty we don't want to say anything to put Beautiful Barry in the same bag as The Hated Bush.

What Has Changed Since Bush Left--------
