NJ Raids $800,000 Football Pool AND

keeps the money.
Quote:

So a guy who has been running this pool for 21 years and appears to have believed he was acting legally, is suddenly getting loads of threatening phone calls and e-mails -- even death threats -- from customers who wrongly think he skipped town with their dough.

In fact, Jack Bovery -- a former currency broker who started the pool when he worked on Wall Street -- has been foolishly (I'm sure his lawyer would agree) defending his ethics on the Internet to people who are out anywhere from $100 to $5,000.

In all, there were nearly 4,000 people who put money into the pool this year -- a pool that had a $750,000 grand prize. And, rumor has it, some prominent folks like sports agents, athletes and even people in law enforcement were among his customers. The prosecutor now has all that cash and even the checks that weren't yet put into the kitty.

Is raiding football pools legal? Are football pools legal? I have no idea, I always thought pools were ok:confused: Of course this IS NJ were talking about so who knows:singing:

$800,000 +- isn't exactly chump change, some pretty heavy hitters were in too, including law enforcement, athletes, etc. About 4,000 pretty p***ed off people right about now:o

I'm in a suicide pool that has about $30,000 in it.

Funny you could go down to Atlantic City and lose your shirt playing poker, but god forbid you put some money in a football pool. Oh, the hypocrisy.

While I would normally feel bad for a guy running a pool getting busted, this wasn't some $50 office pool. At 3/4th of a mil, this is every bit as much an illegal professional gambling parlor as anything you'll ever see.

They are mostly illegal and every bit an American tradition as turkey on Thanksgiving Day.

What a shame ... the smoking gun appears to be the tips he received.

Somebody wasn't getting their 'taste' of the tip anymore.
