League To Discuss Pats Mercy Rule

In order to protect teams from Bill Belichick, the league is considering a rule that would prevent the Patriots from throwing passes longer than five yards once they gain a four-touchdown lead.

If the opposing team makes it a three-score game, the Patriots would be allowed to file an appeal for "more creative routes," but receivers Randy Moss and Wes Welker are no longer allowed to be on the field together in the second half.

League officials hope the new rule, dubbed "The Other Brady Bill," will provide more acceptable final scores, and improve the self-esteem of players across the league. Now, let's see what folks in Washington and Boston are saying about yesterday's 52-7 Patriots victory:

Interesting observation from one of the redskins blogs:

After the game, Gibbs said that he had no problem at all with what the Patriots did. He shouldn’t. In 1991, Gibbs’ Redskins had a comfortable 35-17 lead over the Falcons going into the fourth quarter. Rather than call running plays to kill the clock, Gibbs had Mark Rypien throw the ball. He threw touchdown passes of 82 yards to Gary Clark and of 64 yards to Art Monk. And these weren’t dinky passes with a lot of missed tackles and YAC. They were bombs away. That made it 49-17 and Andre Collins finished off the scoring with a touchdown on a return of Bret Favre’s first NFL pass. Nobody clad in burgundy and gold complained about the score being run up.

the rule should be, if the pats are leading by 4 TDs entering the 4th... they should stop the game and go home, and the broadcasters should go straight ahead to the post game show and analysis...
