Reiss: Guard talk

here's an excerpt:

Quote:

One of today's topics of interest was guard play, specifically with left guard Logan Mankins.

"Logan really doesn’t have a lot of weak points," Belichick said. "He’s strong, athletic, he’s a good pass-protector, he’s a good run-blocker. He can pull. He can block big guys over him."

BB has more to say about the guard position and Logan throughout the piece.

Logan Mankins is probably the best all-around guard for the New England Patriots during the Bill Belichick era.

The Huddle Report called him Logan "Instant" Mankins because they said he'll start at guard from day 1! I guess they were right.

He better be. They spent a first round pick on him.

Nice piece, one of the guys in the trenches we often don't talk about.. just a blue collar guy doing his job.

Mankins was a part of that excellent 05 draft that also included Hobbs and Kaczur. Logan and Nick replaced Klemm and Andruzzi nicely. Mankins hasn't missed a game since he got here (41 games). All three starting now. Pioli and BB just KILL this league with the draft.

Mankins, Hobbs, Kaczur, Sanders, Cassel and a 2006 3rd rounder. That's a nifty haul picking 32nd!

The irony is that it was a wildly unpopular draft with the fans. Not that people really had informed opinions of the OT from Toledo, it was just considered a "buzz kill" to wait and read and anticipate for months, all for "Logan f-in Mankins!!!" :D

(As a coda, that 2006 pick became the chip they used to move up and get Chad Jackson, a much more popular move at the time!)

Don't forget Sanders and Cassell too. That draft was probably the most underrated of the BB era.
