Polls on whether the Pats are the best team ever

Just came across this one on the Baltimore Sun

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/f...2413.htmlstory

Which has the following article preceding it talking about the other great teams in modern NFL history, the 1972 Dolphins, 1985 Bears, 1978 Steelers, 1989 49ers, 1966 Packers.

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/spor..._debate_a.html

The Patriots are by far leading the way in the "poll" - which I find comical.

I mean, I think its great to talk about the potential for this team to go 19-0, even though the team understandably will not...

But all the Pats are right now is a 6-0 team. They've won NOTHING and its premature for any writer to be putting them in that category with just 6 games under their belt.

I understand given the way the Pats have dominated its understandable - but I find it downright comical to be putting a poll on even a blog site at this point.

whats comical is the current nfl.com poll that asks "who is the leagues 2nd best team"

the pats are no listed as an option.

A poll after six games IS comical. I bet the people voting in that poll's average is in the low 20's

They may have been the most dominant team thru 6 games, I have no doubt.

But as far as the rest of the year goes, we do have some areas to tighten up on defense, and the running game kind of depends on Maroney's health as of today, so it will still be a long season before we can draw any conclusions.

Anyone see Hoge and Schlereth yesterday? Hoge thought the '85 Bears could handle them, but Schlereth thought the O was too dynamic.

NOT to piss anyone off, but first, it's SIX games.

I think running on the Bears would have been non-existent. Also, the D line, IMO, could have pressured Brady constantly, I just don't think he ever gets untracked. On Offense, Bears were not jauggernauts, but I think Walter and Co. could gain a few yards.

Fun to surmise. Don't know how the physicality of today's players would come in to play.

All of this best team ever talk is moronic, why don't these people wait until the season is over to conduct such polls.

All I am worried about at the present time is the Doofins pulling off some sort of miracle aka the 2004 Monday night fiasco...............

I think that this is absurd. The 1985 Bears D-line was too small to effectively pressure the 2007 Patriots. If they couldn't win that battle, even Mike Ditka would predict them to get crushed.

Hoge and Schlereth, those well-known Patriots homers... ;)

The 85 Bears were unstoppable because of the 46 defense, a phenomenon that a QB like Brady or Manning would have zero trouble pulling apart. Back then, William Perry, for instance, was considered gigantic; now he's par for the course amongst NFL defensive linemen, who are as big as he is but more athletic.

Re: Polls on whether the Pats are the best team ever

It's always difficult to compare teams across different eras. Different rules, different physical measurements. Today's players imo are bigger and more athletic than the players of days of old. However Old School teams had more depth and talent on average due to the fact that there was no salary cap and no free agency. So it's really a difficult comparison to make in any case. However, if the 2007 Pats do go 19-0 or 18-1, it will be very difficult not to acknowledge them as one of the best teams ever.

Oh the 85' Bears the only one year dynasty. First lets get in the wayback machine, and transplant the 85' Pats with the dynamic '07 Pats. Guess who comes with the Pats? Belichick! The Bears were
eventually figured out by the league, thats why we dont hear of the 86 or 87 Bears. Guess who would have figured them out first and brought their demise on that much quicker? Thats right the Hooded Avenger! 'nuff said
Excelsior!
