Pats moves
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots have made the following roster moves today:

WR Troy Brown, WR Chad Jackson and CB Eddie Jackson have been moved to reserve/PUP. That means these players can not come off the physically unable to perform list until at least after the sixth week of the season. The Patriots can "start the clock" on any of these players between Week 6 and Week 9 of the regular season and then would have 21 days to decide whether to place the player on the active roster or on injured reserve.

Meanwhile, rookie cornerback Mike Richardson was placed on injured reserve with a hand injury. This means Richardson is lost for the season, but the Patriots retain his rights.

The team has 76 players on the roster. Teams must cut to 75 today but the Patriots have been granted an exemption for Asante Samuel.

Richardson to IR.

Samuel granted exemption.

How does an exemption work?

Glad to see that Sey or Thomas were not placed on Reserve/PUP.

(A) Richardson to IR = :( [but at least no chance he ends up in GanGREEN this year]

(B) Thomas not to PUP = :rocker: :robot:

Not yet, but it could still happen.

They're granted by the commissioner usually for 1-2 weeks (although teams may stop them early).

Branch got one after the trade last year. Larry Johnson got a 2-week one after he signed his contract this year but was activated a day or two into it.

That's true, 23 more moves to be made in the next four days.

Breer reports the exemption is valid through Saturday, the cutdown to 53.

Kind of sucks for Richardson, would have been good to see the rook get some playing time this year, even if he it meant he had to be placed on reserve/PUP. Is there a limit for the number of players you can have on reserve/PUP?

What do the players on the PUP and IR list get paid in relation to their contract? A certain percentage? An amount specified in their contract?

Did Richardson have to agree to going on the IR? or if he personally thought his injury was not season-ending and believed that he could be signed by another interested team could he request or demand that he be released?
