Rev. Al Sharpton, Sheriff Lee Baca to meet today over Paris Hilton fray

New, 7 a.m. Alleged preferential treatment spurs meeting; heiress being treated in medical ward at downtown L.A.'s Twin Towers jail.

Paris Hilton's incarceration, reassignment to home detention and return to jail continues to make waves, especially for Sheriff Lee Baca.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has accused Baca of giving Hilton preferential treatment, is to meet with the sheriff this afternoon, according to the Sheriff's Department, while former county Board of Supervisors candidate Andrew Ahlering will be downtown seeking signatures in an effort to have Baca recalled from office.


Hilton is now in the medical ward at the Twin Towers jail in downtown Los Angeles. Absent any behavior problems, she is expected to be released by June 26.

Baca cited a medical condition, though he provided no details. But a source told the New York Daily News in remarks published over the weekend that Hilton -- terrified that guards would snap a cell-phone picture of her on the toilet while she was incarcerated in Lynwood -- didn't eat or drink for three days, which left her facing a life-threatening collapse.

Hilton also suffered from ``extreme claustrophobia" and began hyperventilating, the Daily News reported.

``She cried the entire time, and that wasn't helping the dehydration," the source told the newspaper.

Jail medical officials became concerned that severe dehydration and a buildup of waste and toxins in Hilton's body could cause a complete collapse and ``even kill her," the source told the Daily News.

But City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo objected to the reassignment, and on Friday, Sauer ordered a tearful Hilton back to jail. She is now in the medical section of Twin Towers jail in downtown Los Angeles.

Over the weekend, Sharpton said he believed Hilton was given the star treatment because she is white and rich, and questioned whether a rap star would have been allowed to go home early. He said he wanted to meet with Baca to ensure that all inmates are treated the same.

Sharpton may be a media whore, but it's pretty obvious that Hilton was given special treatment (and probably still is).

I heard on the radio today that the 45 days in jail was extreme. I personally don't know. Never the less, was he at court complaining at any special treatments michael Jackson gets? Shaprton sees a camera and runs. He needs to (Please be quiet - edited) and go away.

I wonder how most black folks feel about Sharpton -- whether they consider him a righteous crusader or an embarrassment. There's no obligation on the sheriff's behalf to meet with this clown, is there? Why even give him the time of day?

Al Sharpton is wrongly claiming that Paris is given star treatment only because she is white and that a black spioled rotten grandaughter of a hotel-chain billionaire would not have been given the same treatment. Rap stars have no connections in society like Paris Hilton does so the comparison is bogus, cheap, and racist. No one but he could see a racial component to it. It's amazing the media continues to pay attention to this race-baiting POS. Even other black civic leaders stopped short of calling it a racial situation and, instead, referred to it as a class distinction. It's good to hear that from people who refuse to perpetuate the race card jive.

Can never defend Sharpton, but what the Sheriff did allows questions on all levels of the LA Country Gov't.... The Sheriff pulled are real bonehead move, not sure if it was politically motivated or if he did want the liability, but it was a pretty stupid move on his part.

From what I've read, Sharpton's pretty well respected in the black community, but that's because he takes the side of those who feel the law is applied unequally. In that, he is very consistent. He's wrong a surprising number of times, but the broad issues he fights for are valid.

so someone must always be there to ensure that the victim's rights, whether are honored, even if there are legitimate questions. More often than not, white society gets its wrong, but those cases about the hundreds of innocent people we've executed and imprisoned do not get much publicity.

Are you saying Rap stars get the same treatment as Paris Hilton? Are their examples where a sheriff has let them out after just a few days without going through the courts? I don't think it's blatant racism, but certainly her fame is not due to her intellect; her wealth and skin color are contributing factors.

This is how it works Tune. If he refuses to meet with Shank Sharpton, he'll be branded a racist, and Shank will organize protests to get him fired. He'll say the Sherrif doesn't care about black people.
