NRA: Don't ban gun sales to suspects

WASHINGTON — The National Rifle Association is urging the Bush administration to withdraw its support of a bill that would prohibit suspected terrorists from buying firearms. Backed by the Justice Department, the measure would give the attorney general the discretion to block gun sales, licenses or permits to terror suspects.

In a letter this week to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, NRA executive director Chris Cox said the bill, offered last week by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., "would allow arbitrary denial of Second Amendment rights based on mere 'suspicions' of a terrorist threat."

"As many of our friends in law enforcement have rightly pointed out, the word 'suspect' has no legal meaning, particularly when it comes to denying constitutional liberties," Cox wrote.

Okaaaaaaaay, you want a better one. Texas Gov. Perry stated that it would be better that people had permits for concealed handguns and that they could bring these handguns to; school, church, court, and......bars. I kid you not.

NRA has a place in the order of things, but in this case they seem to be really off base... surprised that this group, who seem to reflect the law and order side of the US, would be opposed to this.

The NRA exists for the sole purpose of resisting any restrictions imposed by the government on the right to bear arms. They are extreme in their scope and message because the government - especially the domestic police - seem intent on restricting the Second to the point of making it useless. I generally support their mission, but they do cross the line occasionally. This is not a case of that.

When the government "suspects" someone of being a terrorist, what does that mean? Is that a special case where suspicion is equivalent to guilt? If someone has done something wrong, and the government can prove it, fine. Arrest the SOB, put him in jail, try him and convict him. Otherwise, leave them alone to enjoy all their rights like everyone else. It's called due process, and you can't throw it out the window just because you don't like guns or are afraid of terrorism.

I know the Constitution is inconvenient and sometimes imperfect, but it's all we have that makes us Americans. Everything else is artificial. Those who oppose the 2nd Ammendment can organize a movement to adopt a new Ammendment. It's been done. I'd like to abolish the IRS, but I can't get 200 million people to climb on board yet.
