If the cap era ends, then "small market teams" like the Bills, Cardinals, Browns and Bengals will probably disappear. Not right at once, but within a few years because they won't be able to keep up with the teams like the Patriots, Cowboys, and Redskins who have maximized their earning potentials.

These teams would be able to outspend the "small market teams," and would be able to pay for all the big stars. Basically, we'd see the NFL become like major league baseball, where teams like the Royals are glorified AAA teams in terms of talent.

I haven't read the new CBA to see how it would affect sal-cap amortizations, but I know that in the previous CBA, the length of amortization was severely limited.

There's always uncapped year plans, depending on how long the latest CBA agreement is.

and to top off all of that, the Patriots are still $30 million under the cap for 2007.

Yes, a poison pill as Upshaw points out. The union should exercise its rights. The CBA will be good for three more years, and by March 2010, they will need to negotiate again.

My question is how this election by the union would affect contract signed under the current CBA, especially with regard to contract length.

Maybe you dont realize that former Sox Damon and Bronson Arroyo both came from the Royals. Carlos Beltran NY Mets star came from the Royals. Jermaine Dye and there are many more.

Zero.

As long as you are allowed to draft, even if it is the last person in every round, you will grow some talent. When every single player subsequently leaves then you are a AAA team.
