Dolphins' Taylor named top defensive player

Jason Taylor had a very good year good for him.

Good for him. Sad to see a waste of such a great players career. Some are saying Miami should not pay compensation for a Cowher or the like because it's talent they need not coaching. But that will be a hard sell for core defense guys like Taylor and Thomas who have had the talent all along and likely won't want to wait through another painful rebuilding season or two or three and yet another continuing Miami QB controversy season to unfold.

Nice to see only 6 meatheads voted for the steroid assisted talents of Merriman too.

Jason Taylor and Champ Bailey were super-human this year.

But here's my beef. The Pats had the 2nd best scoring defense this year, they had by far the best red zone defense (giving up 1.8 yards/play), and NO ONE on the squad got a vote for defensive player of the year?

I would offer up Ty Warren as a guy who is so under the radar that he's like a top secret stealth jet.

Even Warren wasn't near how dominant Taylor was this year. I have no problem at all with the voting.

I agree that Taylor fully earned the honor, and Bailey was exceptional as well. But this is why I like MVP systems that allow voters to list weighted 1st-2nd-3rd choices. The winner is likely the same in the end, but it's a way for voters to tip their cap to some other worthy performances.

Taylor clearly deserved it, but in our style of D.. Team Defense that is.. probably will not allow someone to be thought of as a top defensive player in the league. I am sure a SB ring is better than an individual trophy.

Always like Taylor ... he deserves it.

We're still going to rag on Matt Light for not blocking him however.

While I agree that JTaylor had a great year, Champ Bailey is hands down the DPOY to me. The difference between Taylor and some other elite DEs is not very much, but the differene between Champ Bailey and any CB is pretty significant. Quite simply, he is the only shutdown corner in the NFL.

If I could take one player in the ENTIRE NFL to be on the Patriots, it would be him probably. Imagine our current run D with him in the secondary stopping the pass?

I agree Champ was superhuman. He is Deion Sanders with great tackling ability. I believe the Broncos linebackers get credit for being so fast and good because Champ covers 1/3 of the field by himself, which makes the rest of the field that might tighter and smaller.
