Santiago signed

The Patriots announced the signing of free-agent tight end O.J. Santiago today.

Some information from the team's press release:

Santiago, 32, is in his seventh NFL season and has played in 78 career games with 60 starts for the Atlanta Falcons (1997-99), Dallas Cowboys (2000), Cleveland Browns (2001) and Oakland Raiders (2003). The 6-foot-7-inch, 265-pound tight end has recorded 81 career receptions for 1,041 yards and nine touchdowns. He was originally drafted by the Falcons in the third round (70th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft. Santiago was Atlanta’s primary starting tight end for three seasons from 1997-99, starting all 41 games in which he appeared over that span. He was traded to Dallas on Aug. 27, 2000 and played in 10 games for the Cowboys that season. In 2001, the Kent State product signed with Cleveland and started 12 of 14 games for the Browns. He spent the 2002 season out of football and signed with Oakland for the 2003 campaign, starting seven of 12 games for the Raiders that year. In 2004, Santiago was with the Denver Broncos during training camp, but was released in the final preseason roster cuts. He was signed by the Raiders on May 24, 2006 and was with Oakland during training camp this season, but was placed on the reserve/injured list on Sept. 2 and released on Sept. 8.

Sep 9 2006 - TE O.J. Santiago (terminated from reserve/injured, injury settlement) was cut by Oakland.

May 24 2006 - TE O.J. Santiago, a tight end by trade who made his mark in 2003 with the unexpected role as a kick blocker, was signed to a free-agent contract. Santiago started seven games for the Raiders in 2003, but made the team in part because of a willingness to play special teams -- something he had done little of with the Atlanta Falcons. Santiago responded with a pair of blocked punts. He also wound up starting seven games and caught five passes for 69 yards.

Aug 17 2004 - TEs O.J. Santiago, Jeb Putzier and Patrick Hape are battling for the No. 3 tight end. Putzier helped himself a little by catching a touchdown against Washington and having a solid week of practice leading up to that game. But Hape has good hands and is a better blocker than Putzier, and Santiago can't be ruled out.

Apr 16 2004 - TE O.J. Santiago has signed with the Broncos. Denver has seven tight ends on its roster.

Jan 27 2004 - TE O.J. Santiago, a free agent, was the starter at the end of the year. That was largely because of the team's reliance on power running and his size and blocking skills.

Maybe he can help; he is Big. It doesn't to hurt to have some size on the line

Is this signing relative to any news I may have missed regarding Watson's status for this week?

I'm not suggesting its related - heck Graham's health this season is reason enough to bring in another big body - but since we only have 2 major receivers I guess I'm overly concerned that Watson will miss some time.

I understood this to be part of the planned 5 wide, no-huddle offensive planned for Houston.

There were many on the Pats Mailing list way back when who *****ed and moaned when we didn't draft OJ Santiago. Maybe they're happy now.

This may indicate that Ben 'Drive Killer' Watson is not healthy.

Re: TE O.J. Santiago signed (merged)

I think I just wet my pants because the Pats signed this guy. I remember a couple seasons ago if I'm not mistaken, the Pats had him in training camp and they cut him. I give this guy a couple of weeks before he gets cut again.
