Question about the practice squad

As I understand it, once a player makes it to the practice squad, let's say the Patriots', another team can pick him up only by signing the player to that team's 53 man roster (the other team can't just sign him to that team's practice squad).

My question is, when another team wants to sign one of our practice squad players to that team's 53 man roster, do we have the opportunity to work out a deal with the player so that he chooses to remain on our practice squad instead?

If the player chooses to notify the team of such an offer, yes; teams cannot "steal" PS players without the players' consent.

AFAIK, though, PS players are not required to give their current employers that option.

Thanks, I think you're right, and that certainly answers the question.

They do not have to...as was said. They sometimes get paid MORE and that is enough to keep them. OR they might like the opportunity here, but that does NOT always happen. It's kind of an infrequent thing...I think maybe 3-4 times in 7-8 years and the Pats have RARELY if ever signed a player off a PSquad during the season.

The Pats have signed players off the practice squad quite a few times since Belichik took over. It's been almost 1-2 a year because of injuries.

Yes.

They can promise to call him up to the team, or they can pay him as if they did. Belichick has done both in the past.

I believe he meant off other teams' PS.

Isn't that how Arrington ended up on the 53? Some other team approached him so he told the Pats and they put him on the 53 instead.

I thought that the OP was talking about OTHER teams PSquad...if that was not the case..I am corrected...for I was ONLY talking about other team's PSqds. Yes, the Patriots move players up from that when there are injuries...they have done that all the time. Sorry..just confused.

Also, I believe that the rules say that signing a player off another team's PS means you must keep him on your 53-man roster for three games...This prevents team from grabbing players from upcoming opponents and then dumping them shortly thereafter. There are probably other reasons too, like maybe it isn't cool to be jerking these $1,000-week guys around.
