BILLS: Evans Becoming Complete Receiver

Realizing that chances of making plays deep down the field were going to be limited with Evans due to the coverage he was likely to see for the foreseeable future, offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild began using him underneath more. The results?

Since the Bills win in Miami, Evans has caught 32 passes for 375 yards and a touchdown in the last four games. He's had at least seven receptions in his last four outings.
-----
"Opponents have been giving us the underneath route with him and double covering him over the top," said quarterback J.P. Losman. "They're forcing us to throw the ball underneath and that's just where the ball has to go right now. And that's where it will go until they take it away."
-----
Tolbert has already seen things beginning to open up deep due to Evans' recent effectiveness in the shorter patterns.
-----
"He's tough to cover," said Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick. "He's tough deep. He's tough short. He's a good run-after-the-catch guy. He can take a five-yard pass and turn it into a long gain."
-----
Belichick was impressed that Evans figured out a way to make a play despite the very tight double coverage, which is why he's telling is players not to relax just because they're devoting two defenders to him.

"We've told our players, just because we're doubling him doesn't mean he won't get the ball and he won't get open," said Belichick.

Problem is, it should have been a play to catapult the Bills to a win and a successful season. Instead, Buffalo finds itself at 2-4 and in desperate need of a win on Sunday.

But, to be honest, no one views this team as a contender. Not now, anyway.
-----
What we’re looking for is the consistency that the top programs have. That the Patriots have shown over the years that they can win consistently week in and week out and stay playing at that level.
-----
In fact, the Bills have scored just nine offensive TDs in six games. Contrast that with 13 by the Patriots in five, and it’s easy to see the difference between these two teams.
-----
“I think Junior has done a solid job for us, he’s certainly getting better and more comfortable with our defenses and our schemes and so forth,” Belichick said. “He’s fit in on all of the different groupings, not just our regular group, but goal line, short yardage and even the sub groupings.
