I'm proud of the United States

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon acknowledged for the first time that all detainees held by the U.S. military are covered by the protections of an article of the Geneva Conventions that bars inhumane treatment, according to a memo made public on Tuesday.

The memo signed by Gordon England, the No. 2 official in the Defense department, followed a June 29 Supreme Court ruling that struck down as illegal the military tribunal system set up by the Bush administration to try foreign terrorism suspects held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The United States previously has determined that certain prisoners taken in Washington's war on terrorism are not deserving of all of the protections of the Geneva Conventions -- international agreements governing the treatment of prisoners of war.

The memo was made public on the day Congress began hearings on how to proceed in trying Guantanamo prisoners after the high court ruling.

It makes me sick, those "people" don't deserve any protections.

This doesn't mean that they're going to be treated any better than say Al Capone, the Rosenbergs, Tim McVeigh, or the DC snipers. It just means that Bush has to put his Kangaroo suit away and let actual trials take place.

My first reaction to this is that if they're prisoners of war, then they don't get trials. They're just prisoners of war to be held in humane conditions (with visitation rights from international aid organizations) until such time as hostilities end.

If Military Tribuals are so bad, why was the most famous war trails in history a Military Tribual?

This was suppose to be the model. But I guess Miltary Tribunals are only bad when Bush orders them.

That's it. Go ahead bash Bush and the Pentagon for honoring the Geneva convention. Geez, you Bush haters, don't you have anything better to do? ;)

Dick Durban was on Fox News today and has just returned from a fact finding trip to Gitmo. According to Durbin we have been treating the prisioners according to the Geneva convention all along. This concern for the terrorist was just political posturing.
