He coached to win, not to avoid losing. All the pansy ass sports writers couldn't wait to lambaste him for his ballsy calls. Like this crap article for example where they even take a swipe at BB:

Ehhhh, here we go. I, for one, thought that the onside kick on the kickoff was not a good call. If the Saints had lost that kickoff (which they damn near did), they pretty much put Manning in striking range, that game shifts to the Colts, and they probably win it. Was it ballsy? Sure. However, it is only considered "ballsy" because it worked. If it didn't work, it would have been stupid. I, for one, am glad that it worked. However, it's not necessarily a call that I agree with.

Exactly what Iw as thinking when I saw it. Payton is very similar to our boy, he's risky and he keeps his team's bizz on the low low. Just the offensive minded version :D

The onside kick surprised me a little but Payton said to win you had to take risks and he does.

Payton did say over and over on media day that he looks at the Patriots organization as a model on how he wanted to start the Saints organization to be a winning Franchise!

Well that's true. When Iw as watching the pile up I was saying to my dad " still don't like the call" . Just because I said it's something out of Belichick's book doesn't always means it's right. It's like saying you have a friend whos got balls and can come through in some jams but doesn't always make the right choice. Payton is a very young coach who hasn't been around long enough, but we as Pats fans would know. Years from now one day someone will say he too has become arrogant, etc. with such calls. The world has a very short attention span ;)

That onside kick was perfect because no one saw it coming, I think half his team didn't even expect it. It changed the tide of the whole game.

If he doesn't do that Manning probably marches down on the first drive and the Saints are looking at 17-6 before they even get the ball.

I would go so far as to say that call won the game for them.

Payton coached great. No doubt he now holds his own torch in the NFL.

Hard to say it's perfect when failure to execute would have probably resulted in the Saints being down in a hole.

I would argue the exact opposite of what Chris Chase is arguing. If the Saints take the FG instead of going for it, they have to kick off to Manning who takes the ball around the 20 and has about 1:45 and 2 TOs to march down the field and we see a halftime score of 17-6. Then he gets the ball back to start the half and if he marches down the field again, the Saints are looking at a 14 point swing. At this point the game is almost out of reach.

Instead, the Colts got pinned back in their territory and have to play conservatively to avoid a safety which just takes a ton of time off the clock and a bad punt gives the Saints new life and a chance to close the gap. Going for it on 4th down essentially neutralized Peyton's odd's of marching down the field and probably saved the game.

That's intellectual dishonesty. ANY play that is poorly executed could have potentially horrible results. He PREPARED his team to be ready for every situation that could come up (like BB) and I'm sure that was one of them. If he didn't think his team could execute an on-side kick I doubt he would have called it.
