Miep Gies dies at 100; gave protection to Anne Frank - latimes.com

Quote:

Miep Gies, who played a pivotal role in introducing to the world the poignant diary of the young Anne Frank and in relating the Frank family's failed attempt to hide from the Nazis, has died. She was 100.

Gies died Monday after a short illness, according to an announcement on her website. No other details were provided.

The scattered papers Gies gathered up after Anne and her family were taken from their hiding place in Amsterdam to concentration camps were later compiled by Anne's father into one of the most widely read nonfiction books of all time.

When I read these stories, the Bosstone song goes off in the back of my brain... wonder if I could garner the courage... like to think I could, but never given the choice...

I'm not a coward,
I've just never been tested
I'd like to think that if I was,
I would pass
Look at the tested and think there but for the grace go
I might be a cowards,
I'm afraid of what I might find out
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could

None of us know if we could do what she did, when she didn't "have to" do it... may none of us ever have to find out, the Bosstones included.

RIP

RIP Miep Gies

Miep Gies insisted she wasn’t a heroine.
"I myself am just an ordinary woman," she said. "I simply had no choice."

She's a true hero. I wonder how many people would do the same, under those circumstances. I remember watching the movie about Anne Frank in elementary school. That was so long ago, we saw it on actual film. RIP.

Well if there is a heaven she is there with MS Frank, RIP.

I consider _The Diary of Anne Frank_ to be the most important book of the Twentieth Century. A view shared, BTW, by the novelist Mark Helprin.

:/ not to pick nits of a whole 'nother character but, if there's a heaven, I guess technically only a very few heavens would let in both her and Ms. Frank. As it's always been presented to me, many americans would stick Ms Frank in the other place ("MWAHAHAAA who will hide you NOW?"). Fu(ked up but that's just theology... there are fu(ked up bits and pieces to all religions. As Gies shows us all, our job is to do right by other people here on earth. When the shutzstaffel hit the fan, she did the right thing because it was right. RIP again, and no disrespect intended to any particular faith in the observation regarding the "exclusive" nature of many afterlife concepts.
