A local man who allegedly choked, beat and raped a 14-year-old girl on Wednesday, then held police at bay for more than four hours when they went to arrest him Thursday night, has been ordered held in lieu of $25,000 cash or corporate surety bail.

Shayne T. Chase, 44, of 96 Scenic Drive, Belmont, was arraigned in Laconia District Court Friday morning before Senior Active Judge David O. Huot.

She said Chase has lived in New Hampshire his entire life except when he was in the Army from 1983 to 1986. She said he was honorably discharged.

Times have changed. There is something more insidious in the world these days. Nine times out of ten substances are involved. So has the quiet rural setting become the perfect place for fringe criminals to thrive. Are drugs so prevalent in these communities that criminals no longer need the cozy light of the city. Two other things. One; this is just information and we just get information faster than in the past. Secondly; our culture is just rabid and there's nowhere to hide.
