Imus was desperate for ratings. Even a first grader could see that that's where Imus' comments were going. I personally hate Maher's guts. I think he's a sniveling little piece of trash. But I will say that this exact sort of thing is his schtick. He's been doing it for years. He can get away with because his comments are used in the context of comedy. Imus couldn't because his comments were used in the context of shocking the nation to draw in ratings. Both are laughing their way to the bank, the only difference being that Imus can't go for a stroll out in public when in a big city anymore.

So what the difference between Maher and Imus? Do the jokes reflect the same assumptions on the part of both of them?

Maher's joke was mocking the racist Republican perception of Obama and right wing rhetoric.

Imus' joke was mocking a group of women because of the color of their skin.
