Brady vs. Hoyer...College comparison

Peter Kings stat of the day, Richard Seymour fallout, Michael Vick ruling, cutdown weekend - Peter King - SI.com
Quote:

Monday dawned with the Patriots having two quarterbacks from Big Ten arch-rivals on their roster. Tom Brady you know. Brian Hoyer you don't, probably. But they weren't very different coming out of college, as their college stat lines show:

Brady/Hoyer -- The College Years
Player Years School Combine Ht/Wt College starts Completion Pct. TD/INT
Brady 1996-99 Michigan 6-4/211 25 .623 35-19
Hoyer 2005-08 Michigan State 6-2/216 27 .558 35-23

Now, don't go saying, "King thinks Hoyer's the second coming of Tom Brady.'' I have no idea what Hoyer is. But the Patriots have never cared much about what the public thinks of their quarterback situation. They abandoned Drew Bledsoe for Brady, then in 2008 went on a playoff chase with Matt Cassel, who hadn't started at quarterback since high school.

eerily similar............... Too bad Hoyer isn't a few inches taller. They would be an almost perfect match, sans Bunchen of course!

There is a HUGE difference between a 62.3% and 55.8% completion percentage.

I think one of the things McShay kept saying on draft weekend is that Hoyer had 50 dropped balls his senior season. Had even half of those been caught, his numbers would have been a lot better.

Not saying Hoyer is the second coming of Tom Brady or will ever become anything remotely close to that, but he looked impressive out there, and apparently the coaches thought that as well, because he leap-frogged Gutierrez, O'Connell, and Walter all in one month.

You also have the new trend on the O-line to ponder with Scar acquiring more 6'2" OC/OG types.

But then there's also the giant sequoia OTs (Sea Beast, LeVoir).

Re: Brady vs. Hoyer...College comparison

BTW, something looked fishy to me about Brady's stats--I remember he only played for 2 seasons and somehow he is getting credit for 50+ games??

So I looked for Brady's college stats and the best I could find is his Wikipedia page which states "The Wolverines won 20 of 25 games when he started". 20-5 sounds more like the Tom Brady I know.

I'm sure the Hoyer stats are wrong too--I can't believe he had 50+ of them either. What is the point of Peter King quoting them? All these stats say is that Brady and Hoyer played on teams with similar records.

Anyway, Hoyer played great in the last preseason game and is a fine developmental QB, but I hope to God we never see him on the field this season. Nothing against the guy--it's not an insult to point out that someone isn't as good as Brady, right?

If Hoyer ends up being a bit better than Matt Cavanaugh
we'll have done well. there is only 1 Tom Brady for now.
